Junior Ty Collins won three events as the Tiffin University men’s and women’s
swimming and diving team closed out the regular season, Wednesday night at
Wilmington Natatorium.
"This team has learned
so much over the past 5 month," said head coach Margarita Kalmikova. “We’re swimming smarter and compete with more
passion. Today was an especially important meet being the last chance to race
before the GLIAC Championships. Now we can go into the meet with a lot of
confidence, and we need it to compete against nationally top ranked teams. And let's not
forget about the men's team getting a winning dual meet record, for the first
year program it is very impressive. This group of men has set the bar very high
for the future of our program.”
The men (4-3-1), who are ranked 22nd in the
CollegeSwimming.com NCAA Division II poll, beat Wilmington (4-5) 112-79. Collins led the way winning the 400-yard
freestyle (4:32.47), the 200 individual medley (2:16.84) and the 800 free
(9:09.85). He is just the second swimmer
to win three events at one meet in TU history.
Freshman Kyle Doss won the 100 backstroke (59.52) and 100
butterfly (1:00.63) while freshman Ygor Zanardo captured the 100 and 200 free
events (55.42, 2:02.92). Additional
victories came from freshman Lucas Merigue in the 50 free (24.76) and the 400 free
relay of Doss, Zanardo, Merigue and junior Pedro Van Isschot (3:40.85).
The women (2-8) lost 122-33 to Wilmington (2-7). Freshman Melinda Ulbrecht recorded the lone
victory by winning the 100 breaststroke (1:19.13). Runner-up performances came from Ulbrecht in
the 200 IM (2:48.02) and the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Kristen
Guballa, Ulbrecht, freshman Brooke Hill and freshman Lauren Sprenger (2:35.78).
Tiffin is off until Feb. 12-15 when they travel to Geneva, Ohio to compete in the GLIAC Championships.
