Washington College Splits With Dickinson

The host Washington College men's swim team picked up its first win over Centennial Conference rival Dickinson College since 2000 as the Shoremen notched a 110-95 dual-meet win over the Red Devils this afternoon inside Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen (6-1 overall, 2-1 Centennial) broke a pair of pool records in the victory.

Washington clung to a 97-91 lead over the Red Devils (6-3, 1-2) heading into the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. Junior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), junior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), sophomore DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall), and sophomore Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) won that race in a pool-record and Washington College season-best time of 3:14.18 to clinch the win for the Shoremen.

The Shoremen opened the meet by breaking the pool record in the 400 medley relay as freshman Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), sophomore Eric Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lebanon Valley), Lee, and Longenecker won that race in 3:36.48.

Washington also won five of the nine individual events in the meet. Elliott won the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best time of 1:57.78 to become the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event, while Yocum won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.22 and the 100 freestyle in 48.43. Freshman Brent Hochstein (Townsend, Del./Salesianum School) added wins in the 200 individual medley in 1:58.83 and in the 200 butterfly in 2:00.38.

Sophomore Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J../Northern Highlands Regional) placed second in both the 1000 freestyle (10:18.62) and in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.56), while Longenecker finished second in the 50 freestyle in 22.23.

Washington's last win over the Red Devils was a 127-76 triumph on January 29, 2000.

Today's victory was also the sixth dual-meet win in a row for the Shoremen, matching the streaks set by the 1999-2000 and 1993-94 teams. The Shoremen won eight meets in a row during the 1994-95 season and seven in a row one year later.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Swarthmore.

The Red Devils improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in conference meets with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 5-3 and 1-3 with the loss.
