The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team hosted the University of Nebraska-Omaha for a Friday night dual at the Glen F. Henry Pool. The Panthers defeated the Mavericks 168 to 132.
200 Medley Relay
The relay team of Natalie Johnson, Caryn Knight, Taylor Ostrowski and Mikki Freese captured a first place finish with a final time of 1:50.79. Sierra Sachtjen, Veronica Herrmann, Kayla McCormick and Morgan Riley placed in third with a final time of 1:54.96.
1000 Freestyle
Stephanie Jackson, Reva Bork, Lindsey Phelps and Alesha Rettenmeier combined to finish second, fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively. Jackson's second place finish came with a final time of 10:51.73.
200 Freestyle
The Panthers captured the top three spots in the 200 freestyle. Freshman Aftin Phyfe collected the win with a final time of 1:57.30. Elise Drewsen and Ashley Nelson finished second and third respectively.
100 Backstroke
Natalie Johnson and Sierra Sachtjen lead the way for the Panthers in the 100 backstroke finishing second and third respectively. Johnson's second place finish came in a time of 1:00.83.
100 Breaststroke
In the 100 breaststroke the Panthers had four of the top six finishes. Caryn Knight, Jill Georgen and Stephanie Paape finished fourth through sixth. Freshman Veronica Herrmann led UNI in the 100 breaststroke with a second place finish. Herrmann's second place came in a final time of 1:07.47.
200 Butterfly
Taylor Ostrowski and Stephanie Jackson took the top two places in the 200 butterfly. Jackson's second place finish came in a time of 2:11.79 while Ostrowski's victory was in a time of 2:09.09.
50 Freestyle
UNI dazzled in the 50 freestyle taking four of the five top places. Mikki Freese captured the victory with a time of 24.96. Aftin Phyfe and Elise Drewsen tied for third place with identical times of 25.49. Riley Morgan placed fifth with a time of 25.98.
1 Meter Diving
Sophomore Allie Bey continued her strong diving season with a first place finish in the 1 meter dive. Bey's final total was 272.70. Fellow sophomore Sarah Kemp finished in second place with a final tally of 243.15.
100 Freestyle
Aftin Phyfe and Mikki Freese placed second and third respectively in the 100 freestyle. Phyfe's second place finish came in a time of 54.21.
200 Backstroke
Senior Natalie Johnson came away with the 200 backstroke victory for the Panthers. Johnson's 200 backstroke win came in a time of 2:12.84. Sierra Sachtjen finished in third place with a final time of 2:16.32.
200 Breaststroke
Veronica Herrmann was the Panthers top finisher in the 200 breaststroke. Herrmann placed in third with a final time of 2:29.45. Stephanie Paape and Jill Georgen placed fourth and fifth respectively.
500 Freestyle
Junior Reva Bork was the top UNI finisher in the 500 freestyle. Bork placed in third with a final time of 5:24.96. Stephanie Jackson captured fourth place with a time of 5:25.95.
100 Butterfly
Sophomore Taylor Ostrowski grabbed her second event win of the evening in the 100 butterfly. Ostrowski's victory came in a time of 59.63. Senior Kayla McCormick took third place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.58.
3 Meter Diving
It was a sweep for Allie Bey on the diving board. Bey took first place in the 3 meter dive with a final score of 275.63, a season-high score for the sophomore. Freshman Ashlyn Clingman also recorded a personal-best score with her second place finish in the 3 meter. Clingman's final score was 268.80. Both Bey and Clingman's diving total were good enough to break season top dive scores.
200 Individual Medley
Caryn Knight and Taylor Ostrowski finished fifth and sixth places respectively in the 200 IM. Knight's final time was 2:16.43.
400 Freestyle Relay
The Panthers wrapped up the dual with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Mikki Freese, Elise Drewsen, Natalie Johnson and Aftin Phyfe captured the victory with a final time of 3:35.90. The team of Ashley Nelson, Kathleen Varner, Sierra Sachtjen and Riley Morgan placed in third with a final time of 3:44.74.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow, January 25th when they will play host to in-state rival Iowa State at the Glen F. Henry Pool at 1p.m.
NOTE: Fans are encouraged to come support the Panther swimmers and divers on their Senior Night. Caryn Knight, Kathleen Varner, Kayla McCormick, Kristen Staude, Natalie Johnson, Rebecca Ortmann and Sarah Hedeen will be competing for the last time at the Glen F. Henry pool.
