The Massachusetts’ men and the Richmond women sit atop the leaderboard after day one of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Minutemen find themselves in first place with a total of 133 points after recording third place finishes in both the 200-yd medley relay (130.16) and the 800-yd freestyle relay (6:33.67). Joshua Koppel of Massachusetts captured an individual title for the Minutemen in the men’s 1 meter diving with a score 303.76
St. Bonaventure, the defending A-10 Champion, is currently in second place overall with 100 points. The Bonnies set two new A-10 Conference meet records en route to victories in the 200-yd medley relay and the 800-yd freestyle relay. The 200-yd medley relay team consisting of Vatslav Lets, Matthew Schutt, Ripley Danner and Jimmy Martin posted a time of 1:28.74. While the 800-yd freestyle relay squad of Michael Pilyugin, Viacheslav Shchukin, Ripley Danner and Jimmy Martin bested the previous conference mark by more than four seconds with a time of 6:29.80.
Following Massachusetts and St. Bonaventure in the standings are La Salle (90), Fordham (61), Saint Louis (60), George Washington (58) and George Mason (57)
The Spiders lead the way with 80 points after placing first in both the 200-yd medley relay (1:41.09) and the 800-yd freestyle relay (7:23.14).
Following Richmond in the standings after day one are George Mason (60), Fordham (58), Rhode Island (58), Duquesne (56), George Washington (50), St. Bonaventure (50), La Salle (44), Massachusetts (34) and Saint Louis (32).
The championships resume tomorrow morning with the preliminary events beginning at 10:30 am followed by finals at 6:30 pm tomorrow evening.
