Calvin, Hope Lead MIAA's

The Calvin men and Hope women hold the lead after the second night of the MIAA swimming and diving championships.

Through seven events, host Calvin is leading the men's competition by 47 points over Hope, having won two relays and two individual events so far. On the women's side, Hope is nine points ahead of Calvin in a hotly-contested competition, with Kalamazoo also in the hunt.

Three conference records have already been established so far, with the MIAA's oldest record falling twice on the same day Thursday. Calvin's Erika Waugh broke the conference record in the women's 100 backstroke with a :57.52 split during the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay, then did it again in the championship race with a :57.44 split. Waugh's 100 back time broke a 20-year-old MIAA record, set originally by Hope's Susan Looman (:57.82)  in 1994 and equaled in 2009 by Hope's Brittaney Reest Delo.

Another conference record fell in the preliminaries Thursday in the women's 50 freestyle as Kalamazoo's Tristyn Edsall swam a :23.31, breaking the record of :23.34 set last year by Hope's Libby Westrate. Edsall went on to take first place in the championship race in :23.65.
