Indiana University junior swimmer Ian Boggs was crowned champion in the sprint event at the 2014 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships on April 4 in Tempe, Ariz.
The triathlon included a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run. Boggs finished in 55:06.58, clocking a time of 9:27 on the swim, 28:51 on the bike and 15:27 on the run.
“There are really no words,” Boggs told USA Triathlon after his win. “I just wanted to go as fast as I could. Winning is obviously the goal, but I was so happy coming into that finishing chute. I knew the runners were coming in strong behind me, so I just wanted to get to the end as quickly as possible.”
In the Olympic-distance event Boggs finished fifth with a time of 1:47:29.58, just under three seconds out of first place. He finished the 1,500-meter swim in 17:38, a 20-kilometer bike ride in 01:18 and a 10-kilometer run in 01:05.
Nearly 1,250 collegiate men and women took part in the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships on April 4-5, in Tempe, Ariz., near the Arizona State University campus. Collegiate clubs participated in three championship races: a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer draft-legal sprint, the traditional 1,500m swim, 36k bike, 10k run championship and the four-person Mixed Team Relay, in which athletes completed a 250m swim, 5k bike and 1.2k run.
