Johns Hopkins Sweeps Gettysburg Invite

Johns Hopkins Men

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's swim team won five events over the final two sessions and won the 2013 Gettysburg Invitational for the third straight year. The Blue Jays accumulated 1,098 points over the two-day, three-session invitational. The host Bullets placed second with 953 points, while Mary Washington placed third (723) and Dickinson took fourth (449).

Hopkins kicked off the second session with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior Dylan Davis and seniors Joseph Acquaviva, David Woodford and Anthony Lordi won the event with a time of 1:33.24. Junior Ryan Cunningham followed with a win in the 400 IM, beating the field by nearly 10 seconds as he touched the wall in 4:10.18. Freshman Scott Sterrett placed third in 4:21.14 and sophomore Bill Gravley placed fifth in 4:24.00. Junior Greg Kogut was the top Blue Jay in the 100 Fly as he finished in fourth place with a time of 51.16.

Freshmen Evan Holder and Andrew Greenhalgh finished just 0.12 seconds apart in the 200 Free for fourth and fifth place, respectively. Holder touched in 1:44.79 followed by Greenhalgh with a career-best time of 1:44.91. The Blue Jays then swept the top three spots in the 100 Breast with Acquaviva leading the way with a winning time of 57.87. Sterrett took second place in 1:00.06 and freshman Bryan Pon finished in third in 1:00.21, a career-best time.

Davis placed second in the 100 Back, finishing with an NCAA provisional time of 51.26. Woodford followed in fourth place with a time of 53.59. Hopkins closed out the second session with second and third-place finishes in the 800 Free Relay. Acquaviva, Holder, senior Will Kimball and freshman Patrick Flynn placed second with an NCAA provisional time of 6:51.98. Taking third place were Cunningham, freshman Josh Hughes, Greenhalgh and freshman Muhammad Hudhud in 7:03.93

The third and final session opened with second and fourth-place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. The team of Lordi, Acquaviva, Holder and Kimball took second in 1:24.03. Juniors Aaron Katrikh and Ed Pagano, Kogut and freshman Jeremy Bauchwitz placed fourth in 1:26.10. Hudhud followed with his second win of the weekend, taking the top spot in the 500 Free as he touched in 4:38.21. Greenhalgh earned a third-place finish with a time of 4:41.35. Lordi placed second in the 200 IM as he finished in 1:54.66, while Acquaviva placed fourth in 1:57.32.

Kogut was the top Blue Jay in the 50 Free, the final individual event of the weekend, as he touched in 21.66. Hopkins then wrapped up the title with first and second-place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay. Davis, Acquaviva, Kogut and Lordi took the win with a time of 3:25.15. Following in second place in 3:25.99 were Woodford, Pon, Pagano and Kimball.

Hopkins will be idle for the Thanksgiving holiday and returns to action at the Total Performance Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College, December 5-7. 


Johns Hopkins Women

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's swim team won nine events in the final two sessions to win the Gettysburg Invitational. The Blue Jays piled up 1,309 points to defend the title by more than 500 points. Mary Washington took second play with 804.5 points, followed by host Gettysburg (747.5) and Dickinson (401).
Hopkins opened the day by taking the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay, led by the team of senior Taylor Kitayama, junior Maggie Storm, freshman Shirley Chan and senior Kylie Ternes with a time of 1:49.51. Following closely in second place were freshman Ariana Waitkavicz, junior Sammi Fox and freshmen Sarah Westley and Kailyn Koh in 1:49.99. Freshman Keri Gawlik then placed third in the 400 IM as she touched in a career-best 4:40.30.

The Blue Jays followed that by taking four of the top five spots in the 100 Fly, including first and second. Chan led the way, winning with an NCAA provisional and career-best time of 57.06. Kitayama touched second in 58.57, followed by junior Jillian Liwacz in fourth with a career-best time of 59.56) and Westley in fifth (59.61). Junior Ana Bogdanovski matched her feat from a year ago, tying her own pool record and winning the 200 Free in 1:51.78. Her time is also an NCAA provisional time. Senior Sarah Rinsma placed fourth in 1:57.00 and freshman Lindsay Kriz took fifth with a time of 1:57.71, a career best.

Junior Maggie Storm was the Blue Jays' top finisher in the 100 Breast, placing fifth in 1:10.13. Koh followed closely in sixth with a career-best time of 1:10.49. Kitayama then won the 100 Back, touching in 58.40, and junior Melinda Yau took second in 58.87. Waitkavicz swam a career-best time of 59.40 and placed fourth. Hopkins closed out the second session with first and fourth-place finishes in the 800 Free Relay. Bogdanovski, senior Alex Ladd, Fox and Rinsma took the win with a time of 7:46.47. Taking fourth were Liwacz, Kriz, Westley and freshman Emily Lubin in 8:00.80.

The third and final session opened with another Hopkins win, this time in the 200 Free Relay. Bogdanovski, Rinsma, Kitayama and Ternes swam to the win in 1:36.92. Koh, Chan, Ladd and Liwacz followed in second place with a time of 1:38.87. Kriz was then the top Blue Jay in the 500 Free as she touched in 5:11.73, a career-best, for fourth place. Junior Selena Guerrero-Martin placed fifth in 5:17.62. Fox picked up another JHU win, clocking in at 2:11.81 in the 200 IM. Chan placed fourth in 2:13.22, another career best.

Hopkins turned in an impressive performance in the 50 Free, as the Blue Jays swept the top five spots. Bogdanovski grabbed the win as she finished in 23.89, an NCAA provisional time. Rinsma took second in 24.20, followed by Liwacz (24.35), Ternes (24.57) and Koh (24.59). Liwacz and Koh each posted career-best times in the race. Hopkins was just as impressive in the final event of the invitational, the 400 Medley Relay, as JHU took first through third. Bogdanovski, Storm, Kitayama and Ladd won the relay with a time of 3:59.09. Taking second place were Fox, Koh, Chan and Liwacz with a time of 4:02.88. And in third place came freshmen Kristen Kaiser and Pilar Shimizu, Rinsma and Lubin in 4:04.92.

Hopkins is idle for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to action at the Total Performance Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College, December 5-7. 


Mary Washington Men

Day two of the Gettysburg Invitational saw the Eagles finish in third place with 723 points. The Eagles were behind Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg, and ahead of Dickinson.

Session one saw the Eagles gain many top three finishes. Alex Anderson continued his strong weekend with a win in the 100 Fly, with a time of 50.08. Fellow Eagle Dallas Tarkenton finished third in the event at 50.94. Sean Mayer and Henry Bassett took first and third respectively in the 100 Back at 51.15 and 51.76. The 200 Medley Relay team of Sean Mayer, Vance Solseth, Tarkenton and Bassett finished in third with a time of 1:35.48.

The second session saw the quartet of Anderson, Bassett, Solseth, and Matthew Garstka finished third in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:25.40. Tyler Gimple earned a second place finish in the 500 Free. Gimple finished in 4:41.09. Anderson got a third place finish in the 50 Free (21.18) and also teamed with Mayer, Don Tucker, and Bassett for a third place finish in the 400 Medley Relay (3:26.02).

The Eagles return to the pool January 11th, when they host CAC foe Salisbury starting at 1:00 p.m.


Mary Washington Women

The UMW women's swim team finished in second place in the Gettysburg Invitational. The Eagles were behind Johns Hopkins, but ahead of host Gettysburg and Dickinson.

The first session saw sophomore Abby Cox win the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.68. The Eagle team of Anna Corley, Hannah Hagy, Amber Kerico and Tara Banks earned third place in the opening 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.23. Hagy also earned a third place finish in the 100 Fly (58.80) and the 100 Breast (1:09.21). Jessica Singer and Banks finished second and third in the 200 Free with times of 1:56.61 and 1:56.79 respectively. The team of Cox, Banks, Singer and Ashley Walnut finished the 800 Free Relay in second place (7:55.14).

The final session was started by Singer and her win in the 500 Free at 5:05.29. Kristen Callahan and Cox followed that up with a two-three finish in the next event, the 200 IM. Callahan crossed at 2:13.01, just edging Cox at 2:13.08.

Up next for the Eagles is CAC foe Salisbury on January 11th. The Eagles host the Sea Gulls, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
