Gettysburg Invite Recaps: Day 1

Johns Hopkins Men

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins men’s swim team won a pair of individual events and are in second place after the first session of the Gettysburg Invitational. Host Gettysburg leads with 315 points, followed by Hopkins in second with 286 points. Mary Washington is in third place with 234 points and Dickinson is in fourth with 136. The Blue Jays collected three NCAA provisional times and a pool record through the first six events.

Junior Dylan Davis opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Back, as he touched in 1:53.20, an NCAA provisional time. Freshman Patrick Flynn followed in third place with a career-best time of 1:54.60. Senior Will Kimball was the Blue Jays’ top finisher in the 100 Free as he clocked in at 47.01 for fifth place. Hudhud then won the 200 Breast, finishing in 2:09.74.

Junior Greg Kogut took second place in the 200 Fly as he finished in a season-best time of 1:53.65. His time is also an NCAA provisional time. Hudhud followed in fourth place with a time of 1:56.71. Hopkins then took the top two spots in the 1650 Free. Freshman Andrew Greenhalgh won the event, touching in a pool-record time of 15:56.49. His time was also a career best, more than nine seconds off his previous best. Freshman Josh Hughes followed in second place with a career-best time of 16:35.33.

Hopkins closed out the day with a third-place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Kimball, freshman Jeremy Bauchwitz, Kogut and freshman Evan Holder finished in 3:07.70.


Johns Hopkins Women

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins swim team won four of six events to take the lead after the first session of the Gettysburg Invitational Friday night. The Blue Jays accumulated 368 points through six events to lead Mary Washington by 99 points. Gettysburg is third with 238 points, followed by Dickinson with 120 points. Hopkins also posted three NCAA provisional times and added a school record.

Hopkins opened the night by taking the top two spots in the 200 Back, led by junior Sammi Fox who touched first in 2:08.10. Junior Melinda Yau followed in 2:09.75 to take second place. The Blue Jays did one better in the next event, the 100 Free, taking first through third. Junior Ana Bogdanovski led the charge, as she finished in 50.99 for an NCAA provisional time and the eighth fastest in program history. Freshman Kailyn Koh placed second with a career-best time of 52.90, while junior Jillian Liwacz followed in third place with a time of 53.43.

Junior Maggie Storm was the Blue Jays’ top finisher in the 200 Breast as she clocked in at 2:31.43. In the next event, the 200 Fly, freshman Shirley Chan not only got the win, but broke the Johns Hopkins record as well. She touched in 2:05.93 to best the mark by just nine-hundredths of a second. Her time is also an NCAA provisional time. Freshman Keri Gawlik placed second with a career-best time of 2:09.43.

Freshman Lindsay Kriz then placed second in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:51.24, shaving more than 44 seconds off her career best time. Junior Selena Guerrero-Martin took sixth place in a time of 18:24.99, as she knocked more than 14 seconds off her career best time. Hopkins closed out the first session with first and third-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. The team of Koh, seniors Sarah Rinsma and Kylie Ternes and Bogdanovski swam a winning and NCAA provisional time of 3:30.70. Liwacz, junior Hannah Benn, Fox and freshman Sarah Westley placed third in 3:36.01.

The second session of the Gettysburg Invitational begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 23 with the 200 Medley Relay. 


Mary Washington Men

The UMW men's swim team competed in day one of the Gettysburg Invitational on Friday. A number of Eagles placed in the top three of the 12 events on day one. Competing teams include the host Bullets, Johns Hopkins, UMW, and Dickinson.

Anderson picked up another individual victory in the 200 Fly, with a time of 1:50.44, a full three second ahead of second place. Anderson teamed up with Dallas Tarkenton, Vance Solseth and Henry Bassett to finish second in the 400 Free Relay. The quartet finished with a time of 3:07.53, just behind the team from host Gettysburg.

Other Eagle finishers include Don Tucker, who earned a second place finish in the 200 Back, with a time of 2:10.42. Zach Eisig was a third palce finisher in the 1650 Free. Eisig finished the distance event in a time of 16:35.33.


Mary Washington Women

The UMW women's swim team completed day one of the Gettysburg Invitational on Friday. The competing teams include Johns Hopkins, Dickinson, UMW and host Gettysburg.

Amber Kerico continued her stron start to the season with a win in the 200 Breast. Kerico finished ahead of teammate Kristen Callahan in a time of 2:28.19. Callahan finished in 2:30.61. Jessica Singer also picked up a victory on Friday in the 1650 Free. Singer won in 17:38.50, while fellow Eagle Ashley Walnut finished in third place in 17:51.24.

Other Eagle finishers include Anna Corley, who finished in third in the 200 Back. Corley finished with a time of 2:09.90. Abby Cox was a third place finisher in the 200 Fly with a time of2:11.27. To cap the night, the 400 Free Relay team finished in second place behind Gettysburg. The quartet of Tara Banks, Lauren Wood, Corley and Singer finished in a time of3:36.07.
