Bucknell Sweeps American, Lafayette and Navy

Mike Nicholson won three events and Louis Behnen claimed two to go along with a pair of program top-10 times as the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team had an outstanding home quad meet Saturday at Kinney Natatorium sweeping Patriot League opponents American, Lafayette and Navy. The victory over the Mids ended their 46-meet win streak against Patriot League foes that stretched back to the 1990-91 season, and it was their first loss since joining the Patriot League in 2003-04.

Bucknell (4-1, 3-0 PL) defeated American 250-48, Lafayette 249-49 and Navy 152-148. The Bison improved to 7-3 against the Eagles and 50-4 opposite the Leopards. The win over the Mids marked the first in the 11-meet series.

“I am very proud of our team for the way they competed today,” said Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer after the sweep. “They have been training hard and making great progress in the pool. We saw some of that progress today; however, it is important that we continue to progress so that we can achieve our ultimate goals this year.”

Bucknell picked up some valuable points on Navy in the final individual race of the day, the 200 IM, as Nicholson, Jack Robinson and Will Rappaport finished 1-2-3 in the event. Ben Seketa touched the wall fourth, while the Mids took the next four spots in the race.

Bucknell claimed nine first-place finishes to Navy’s seven with Nicholson and Behnen combining for five of the Bison’s. In addition to winning the 200 IM, Nicholson finished first in the 200 fly and 200 breast. Behnen won the 1,000 free in the No. 3 time (9:32.41) in program history and the 200 back in the No. 9 time (1:51.60) in the school record books.

Robinson (100 back), Ben Seketa (100 breast) and Steve Grune (50 free) rounded out the list of Bison individual winners, while Matt Hadley, Seketa, Nicholson and Grune combined to win the 200 medley relay.

Brian Phillips finished two spots behind Behnen in the 1,000 free in a career-best time of 9:35.94, which is good for the No. 4 spot in the program’s record book.

In addition to his two victories, Behnen was Bucknell’s top finisher (2nd) in the 500 free.

Patrick Alvermann was the top Bison finisher off the one-meter diving board with a fourth-place showing, while Tyler Wenzel topped all Bucknell divers by finishing third off the three-meter.

Bucknell will be back in action at Kinney Natatorium when it hosts its own invitational Nov. 22-24. Prelims will be each day at 10 a.m. with finals beginning at 6 p.m.
