Towson Sweeps College of Charleston, George Mason, Northeastern

The Towson University men's swimming and diving team improved to 6-1 overall this season with wins over College of Charleston (score of 215-116) and George Mason (182-167) on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the POD meet hosted by George Mason.

With six dual meet victories, Towson has its most since the 2006-07 season.

"For the men, it was great," Towson Head Coach Pat Mead said. "It's a matter of how our men believe in the work and believe in the process. We have a group of men that really believe they can win." 

Matt Lowe, Tim Schade and Jeremy Liu stepped up for the Tigers on Saturday, each winning events. Lowe won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.84, Schade the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.98 and Liu the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.98. Sophomore Matt McKenney also won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.48 for Towson.

On the diving boards, Alex Cohen had a tremendous three-meter performance, setting a career-high with a score of 307.60. He won the event.

Towson heads to George Washington next Saturday for a meet beginning at 1 p.m.



The Towson University women's swimming and diving team improved to 8-0 this season after picking up three wins against Northeastern (score of 270.50-82.50), College of Charleston (291-62) and George Mason (263-90) Saturday afternoon in a POD meet hosted by the Patriots.

"Even though the scores look a little lopsided, we still had some very close races," Towson Head Coach Pat Mead said. "We're looking at the big picture to make sure we are on track for a good end of the season."

Saturday, senior Kaitlin Burke took home wins in a pair of events, including the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.51 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.27 for Towson.

Sophomore Jenna Van Camp also won two events for the Tigers, including the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke.

Senior Melanie Rowland also performed well, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly and second in the 100-yard butterfly events.

The Tigers head to George Washington for a meet next Saturday starting at 1 p.m.



College of Charleston traveled to the campus of George Mason to compete in the program’s first CAA competition of the year. Unfortunately, the men and women fell to tough teams in George Mason, Northeastern and Towson.
 
With different team head-to-head scores, the GMU men defeated CofC, 249-104, the Northeastern men won, 242.5-110.5, and the Towson men won, 291-62. On the women’s side, CofC lost to George Mason (219.5-127.5) and Towson (215-116).
 
On the men’s side, CofC won two events behind the youthful efforts of sophomore Alex Wood and freshman Cason Brown. Wood won the 100 free in 46.49, while Brown took home first in the 100 back (51.88). Freshman Buckley Powell placed second in the 100 fly (51.23), while senior Greg Karel took second in the 50 free (21.32).
 
CofC’s youth movement continued with freshman Will Ryan who garnered two third-place finishes, in the 200 breast (2:09.46) and 100 breast (59.51). Senior Dave Sherrier placed third in the 200 free (1:42.67), while Pablo Ortiz picked up fourth in the 200 fly (1:53.63) and sixth in the 400 IM (4:14.67).
 
Sophomore Elijah Bohon took fourth in the 200 back (1:54.32), and Josh Shaffer and Jake Gregory earned fifth-place finishes in the 500 free and 1650 free, respectively.
 
On the women’s side, Sarah Graif performed well, finishing second in the 100 free (52.60) and the 50 free (24.31). Senior Sarah Boyle recorded two sixth-place finishes in the 100 fly (58.36) and 100 back (58.92).
 
Senior Meredith Smith placed ninth in the 200 free (1:57.95) and junior Liz Mooney took ninth in 100 breaststroke (1:09.06).
 
In the diving events, sophomore Megan Norton placed fifth in the three-meter dive (224.63) and junior Nicole DeMarco took eighth in the one-meter (194.7).
 
Charleston returns home on Nov. 9 for a meet against East Carolina and Georgia Southern at the Stern Center.
