Randolph-Macon Invite Recaps: Day 2

Frostburg State

The Frostburg State men's and women's swimming teams both captured ninth place at the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jacket Invitational that wrapped up action late Saturday.

The FSU women grabbed ninth out of 13 teams with 99 points while the men earned ninth of 11 squads with 41 points.

Junior Kaitlyn Donch and sophomore Jonathan Shepard each posted a pair of top-10 finishes to lead the women's and men's teams, respectively.

Donch grabbed the highest finish for any Bobcat swimmer with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.32. She collected fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:38.19.

Donch also helped a pair of relay teams to top-10 finishes. She joined sophomore Maci Quintanilla, junior Jaclyn Franzak and junior Meredith Johnson for a ninth-place showing in the 200-yard medley in 2:01.89. Donch, Quintanilla and Johnson later joined junior Elizabeth Jarrell to earn 10th place in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 4:01.09.

Individually, Franzak captured 12th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.81) and Quintanilla grabbed 13th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:26.17). Freshman Meaghan Dix took home 14th in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:48.08.

Shepard led the men's team with sixth place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.8) and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.13).

Senior Jesse Gregory handed in a pair of solid individual efforts with 12th place in the 400-yard IM (4:42.69) and 19th in the 200-yard IM (2:10.57).

Gregory and Shepard combined with senior Vincent Faiella and freshman Aleksander Combs for 13th in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:18.62). The foursome also earned 16th in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.46.

The Frostburg State swimming teams return to action on Jan. 10 when they take on Franciscan and Pitt-Bradford in Steubenville, Ohio at 6:00 pm.


St. Mary's Men

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team finished fifth at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational Saturday night.

The R-MC Yellow Jacket Invitational, which was held at the Greater Richmond Aquatic Center, featured 11 teams, including Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's as well as fellow Capital Athletic Conference members, Frostburg State University and Marymount (Va.) University. The Seahawks posted fifth with 362.50 points, placing ahead of Marymount (6th, 336) and Frostburg State (9th, 41).

Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) paced the Seahawks with a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.90 while fellow classmate Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) came in 16th in 2:27.88.

Senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.47 while junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) finished seventh in 2:01.89. Sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) also scored in this event as Lilley took 15th in 2:08.31.

Sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led St. Mary's in the 200 butterfly with a sixth-place finish in 2:02.58 while Petersen placed ninth in 2:03.52. Sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) finished behind Petersen in 10th in 2:05.00.

Sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown), Cope, and Petersen paced the Seahawks to sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.08.

Burgess also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle in 16:57.98 while Speer took seventh in the 100 freestyle in 48.84. Walchuck scored in the 100 free as well with a 15th-place finish in 50.02.

The foursome of Lilley, sophomore Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson), first-year Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood), and Forest tallied a 13th-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:27.40.


St. Mary's Women

Junior Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) nabbed her third individual win at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational in record-setting fashion in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team to a fourth-place finish.

The R-MC Yellow Jacket Invitational, which was held at the Greater Richmond Aquatic Center, featured 13 teams, including Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's as well as fellow Capital Athletic Conference members, Frostburg State University and Marymount (Va.) University. The Seahawks tallied 473 points for fourth, finishing eight points behind Marymount who took third in the team standings with 481 points.

Kohles, who won the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley in the first two sessions, picked up a third individual gold medal in the 1650 freestyle with a meet record of 18:01.58. Senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished second behind Kohles in 18:16.87.

Sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) paced the Seahawks in the 200 backstroke with a second-place finish in 2:15.86 while sophomore Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) placed second in the 200 butterfly in 2:14.56.

Senior captain Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) posted a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.98 while junior Mikaela Greer (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) took 16th in 2:51.49. Sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana), O'Connor, Kohles, and D'Ambrosio guided St. Mary's to a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:47.06.

Senior Claire Huckenpoehler (Towson, Md./Towson) was 12th in the 200 fly in 2:40.34 while junior Mae Rukstalis (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) came in 13th in 2:46.64.

The foursome of senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana), sophomore Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), junior Mónica Claro (Rockville, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]), and junior Kaleigh O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) also scored for the Seahawks in the 400 free relay with a 15th-place finish (4:09.42).

St. Mary's will be back in action in the new year after the Seahawks return from their winter training trip in Florida to host Johns Hopkins University in a long-course meet on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Aquatic Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center.


St. Mary's (Md.) Men

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team continued competing at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational Saturday morning, swimming seven events as part of Session 2.

The R-MC Yellow Jacket Invitational, which is being held at the Greater Richmond Aquatic Center, features 10 teams, including Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's as well as fellow Capital Athletic Conference member, Marymount (Va.) University. The invitational wraps up tonight with the final and third session comprised of six events.

First-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) notched the Seahawks' highest finish of the second session with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.81.

Walchuck, along with senior Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest), sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), and junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), led St. Mary's to a fifth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:16.09.

Petersen and senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) each collected a sixth-place finish in their respective individual events. Petersen was sixth in the 400 individual medley in 4:22.73 while Forest took sixth in the 100 backstroke in 55.50.

Cope notched an eighth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 56.91 and then led off the ninth-place 200 medley relay team of Forest and sophomores Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) which posted a time of 1:42.69.

The foursome of Forest, senior Jon Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown), sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson), and first-year Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) tallied a 10th-place finish in the 800 free relay in 7:47.89.

Karimi placed 11th in the 400 IM in 4:41.87 while Lilley was 11th in the 100 butterfly in 56.64. Braker earned a 14th-place finish in the 100 back in 59.19 while senior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) paced the Seahawks in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.69.


St. Mary's (Md.) Women

 Junior Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) collected her second individual win at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational as Kohles paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team in Session 2 Saturday morning.

University. Competition wraps up this evening with the third and final session.

Kohles, who won the 500 freestyle yesterday, garnered a gold medal in the 400 individual medley today, posting a winning time of 4:43.03 that was one second off the meet record. Senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) claimed a third-place finish in the same event in 4:46.86.

O'Connor and Kohles then helped the Seahawks set a school record in winning the 800 freestyle relay, swimming the third and anchor legs, respectively, of the relay. Sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) led off the winning relay followed by sophomore Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson). The team notched a gold medal time of 7:59.06, knocking off the old mark set at last year's CAC championships by 0.09 seconds.

Machlin tallied a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.28 while senior captain Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) picked up a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.11. McIlmail led St. Mary's in the 200 freestyle with a fourth-place finish in 2:00.29.

The foursome of sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), D'Ambrosio, Machlin, and McIlmail posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.58. The quartet of senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana), first-year Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK), junior Kaleigh O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Fallston), and senior Claire Huckenpoehler (Towson, Md./Towson) also scored for the Seahawks in the 800 free relay with a 10th-place finish (8:56.04).

Liming, Huckenpoehler, junior Mikaela Greer (Millersville, Md./Old Mill), and sophomore Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) came in 12th in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.47. Straight led the team in the 100 backstroke with a 13th-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.09.

Huckenpoehler claimed 14th in the 500 free (5:24.95) followed by junior Mae Rukstalis (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) in 15th (5:26.92). Greer scored for St. Mary's in the 100 breaststroke, placing 14th in 1:18.48 followed by junior Mónica Claro (Rockville, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) in 15th (1:18.83), while Rizkallah notched a 16th-place finish in the 100 fly in 1:08.24.


Washington College Women

The Washington College women's swim team won nine medals and finished fifth of 13 teams at the Randolph-Macon Invitational held yesterday and today in Chesterfield, Va. 

Senior Ellie Miskiel (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) won gold medals in both breaststroke events, taking the 100 breaststroke in a Washington College season-best 1:08.67 and the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best 2:25.67. In her other individual event, she added an 11th-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26.23. 

Miskiel was a part of four of the Shorewomen's five medal-winning relay teams. She swam the breaststroke leg of the gold medal-winning 400 medley relay team as junior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), Miskiel, freshman Angelina Tomasura (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), and senior Carly Ogren (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) won the event in a WC season-best 4:09.09. She swam the lead-off leg of the gold medal-winning 400 freestyle relay, joining Howard, freshman Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), and Ogren to win the event in a WC season-best 3:41.82. Miskiel swam the breaststroke leg of the silver medal-winning 200 medley relay team as Howard, Miskiel, Tomasura, and Ogren were second in a WC season-best 1:55.46 and the second leg of the bronze medal-winning 200 freestyle relay as Ogren, Miskiel, Maxwell, and Howard were third in a WC season-best 1:42.80.  

Miskiel's lead-off leg in the 400 freestyle relay was completed in 54.63, making her the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest 100 freestyle swimmer ever. 

Maxwell won a silver medal in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:16.69, and a bronze medal in the 1650 freestyle, finishing in 18:23.34 to become the Shorewomen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She was also fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:52.27 and swam the lead-off leg of the bronze medal-winning 800 freestyle relay where she was joined by sophomore Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area), freshmanJacquelyn Creitz (Schencksville, Pa./Parkland), and Tomasura for a third-place finish in 8:26.70.

Howard had a pair of fourth-place finishes in individual events in the 100 backstroke (WC season-best 1:02.39) and 200 backstroke (2:16.25). She was also eighth in the 50 freestyle in 25.81. Tomasura had a pair of top-five individual finishes as she was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.02 and fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.81.  She was also seventh in the 200 butterfly in 2:23.94. 

Fritzinger also had a pair of top-five finishes, placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:36.79 and fifth in the 400 individual medley in 4:54.77. She was also sixth in the 1650 freestyle in 18:57.04. Ogren was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.58, sixth in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best 5:25.73, and ninth in the 100 freestyle in 55.90. Creitz placed eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:21.29.

The Shorewomen return to action January 16th with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference meet at Widener.


Washington College Men

The Washington College men's swim team won seven gold and 17 total medals and broke six school records en route to beating out 10 other competing teams to win the Randolph-Macon Invitational held yesterday and today in Chesterfield, Va.  The overall team title is the first-ever at an invitational or conference championship meet in the team's history.

Freshman Brent Hochstein (Townsend, Del./Salesianum School) won three individual gold medals for the Shoremen. He broke the school record in winning the 400 individual medley in 4:05.56, a time that was also a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Championships. He turned in Washington College season-best times to win gold in both the 200 individual medley (1:55.43) and the 200 butterfly (1:55.60). Both of those times were good enough to make him the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in those events. 

Sophomore Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) supplied the Shoremen's other individual gold medal, winning the 100 butterfly in a WC season-best 52.18, bettering his already existing standing as the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was also fourth in the 50 freestyle in 22.34 and fifth in the 100 freestyle in 48.53. His time in the 100 freestyle made him the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

The Shoremen won gold medals in three of the five relay events in the meet. Junior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), freshman Pat Elliott(Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), sophomore Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J../Northern Highlands Regional), and Longenecker broke the school record in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:07.86. Elliott, Morgan, junior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and Yocum won the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best 3:33.22, while sophomore Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), sophomore Eric Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lebanon Valley), Lee, Longenecker won the 200 medley relay in a WC season-best 1:37.41.

Elliott, Lee, Yocum, and Morgan each won two individual medals. Elliott won silver in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 1:58.04 to become the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He took bronze in the 100 backstroke in a school-record time of 53.08, breaking the record he set earlier in the meet with his 53.92 lead-off backstroke leg of the Shoremen's 400 medley relay. He also broke the school record in the 500 freestyle, finishing in fourth place in 4:48.55.

Lee won silver in the 100 butterfly in 52.20 and bronze in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.80. He was also fourth in the 20 individual medley in 2:01.62. Yocum won silver in the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 1:44.17, bettering his own mark as the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He won bronze in the 100 freestyle in 48.05 and also placed sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:51.68. 

Morgan broke two school records while taking bronze in the 1650 freestyle. He broke his own school record for that event by finishing in 16:45.15 and also broke the school record in the 1000 freestyle during his swim, putting up a split time of 10:04.67. He was also sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:51.24 to become the Shoremen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event and swam a WC season-best 2:13.20 as an exhibition entrant in the 200 breaststroke.

Washington won a pair of bronze medals in relay events. Yocum, Lee, freshman Jason Mercando (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and Longenecker were third in the 400 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 3:14.84, while Logan, Burcin, Hochstein, and Mercando took third in the 400 medley relay in 3:38.50, giving the Shoremen two of the top three relays in that event.

Burcin and Logan both turned in multiple high individual finishes. Burcin was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.62 and sixth in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 1:01.54. He was also tied for 15th in the 50 freestyle in 22.98. Logan was fifth in the 100 backstroke, bettering his own status as the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in that event by finishing in 54.57. He was also sixth in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.50 and seventh in the 100 butterfly in 55.60. 

Feshman Danny Furman (Glen Arm, Md./Calvert Hall) placed 10th in the 100 butterfly in 56.18 and 13th in the 200 butterfly in 2:06.48. Mercando finished 11th in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.89, 13th in the 100 freestyle in 49.87, and tied for 15th in the 50 freestyle with Burcin in 22.98. Sophomore DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) added a 13th-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.24.

In addition to the Shoremen's five medal-winning relay teams, they also had four other top-six relay teams in the meet. Lee, Yocum, Logan, and Longenecker were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 1:29.00. Elliott, Morgan, Hochstein, and Bradshaw were fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:40.80. Mercando, Bradshaw, Elliott, and Burcin placed sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.04. Mercando, Bradshaw, Logan, and Hochstein took sixth in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:18.80.

The Shoremen won the meet by a margin of 105 points, finishing with 704 to second-place Randolph-Macon's 599. Catholic was third with 506.5, Division II Davis & Elkins fourth with 465.5, and St. Mary's fifth with 362.5 

The Shoremen return to action January 16th with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference meet at Widener.
