Princeton Men, Ohio Women Capture Mid-Major Titles

The Princeton University men's swimming team and Ohio University women's swimming team have been named 2011-12 Mid-Major Division I Championships by CollegeSwimming.com.  Now in its 10th year, the Mid-Major Rankings serve to provide an objective point system to compare teams’ relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup.

It was the third Mid-Major title for the Princeton men who finished second in last year's final rankings.  Two weeks ago Princeton won its fourth-consecutive Ivy League title, its first four-year run since 1996.  Ivy rival Harvard University finished second behind the Tigers for the third-straight month.  The U.S. Naval Academy, the 2010-11 Mid-Major Champions, moved up one place to finish third in the final rankings.

On the women's side Ohio University finished atop the final poll.  The Bobcats were edged by Toledo for the Mid-American Championship, but put up 263.15 using the Rankings' Dual-Meet lineup.  James Madison University finished second following its title at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and Buffalo finished third.  Harvard University fell from first to fourth.  The Crimson has four Mid-Major titles in its history.

The Ivy League led all conferences with nine teams (five women's, four men's) in the rankings.  The Sun Belt Conference placed five women's and two men's teams in the rankings.

Now in its 10th year, the Mid-Major Rankings serve to provide an objective point system to compare teams’ relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup. The ranking is available to those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference or Mountain West Conference, or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules.
