Competing in the first part of a two-day meet against Wisconsin, the No. 3 USC women’s swimming and diving team opened a 106-61 lead while the No. 5 men’s squad led 93-74 on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at the USCMcDonald’s Swim Stadium.
The Trojan men’s squad held out eight of its top swimmers (the octet all raced last weekend at a meet in Dallas) and tested its depth against the Badgers while the women’s squad remained at full strength.
Wisconsin swept both 200y medley relays to open the meet. The Badgers women’s ‘A’ squad won with a 1:42.64 to USC’s 1:43.35 while Wisconsin’s men won 1:32.51 to 1:32.62.
Junior Haley Anderson posted USC’s first individual win of 2012, dominating the 1650y free in 16:14.10, breaking the 1985 pool record of 16:19.47. Wisconsin’s Danielle Beck with took second (16:41.95) while Troy sophomore Lynette Lim took third (16:46.04).
In the men’s mile, freshman Cary Wright took over the lead halfway through the race and went on to win in 15:45.04. Sophomore teammate Nick Johnson was second (16:02.01) while senior Julian Bonse made it a sweep in third (16:06.41).
In a rare swim out of lane 8, Trojan senior Katinka Hosszu controlled the 200y free from start to finish. Racing in one of five events in which she owns ‘A’ cuts, she won the event in 1:47.87 while Badger Laura Miller took second (1:49.72). Trojan junior Christel Simms was third (1:50.38).
Badger captain Wes Lagerhausen opened the men’s 200y free in first out of lane 1 before teammate Michael Weiss took over after the halfway point and went on to win in 1:39.36. Trojan sophomores Sean Mulroy (1:41.78) and Michael Godbe (1:41.94) finished 2-3.
Trojan junior Yumi So jumped to the lead halfway through the100y back and maintained the edge, winning in 55.00. Hosszu glided to second (56.51) while sophomore Meghan Hawthorne made it a sweep in third (57.11). In the men’s race, junior Nick Karpov led start to finish, touching first in 50.33. Wisconsin’s Garrett Mulchrone was second (51.50) while USC freshman Luca Spinazzola was third (51.63).
Wanland won the 100y breast in 1:02.28, edging Trojan juniorJessica Schmitt, who touched in 1:03.04. Senior Ania Kowalczyk claimed third (1:04.37) while junior Jordan Danny was fourth (1:05.20). In a tight men’s race, freshman Sergio Lujan Rivera out-touched Badger Tariq Miller, 56.78 to56.87 while Trojan Blake Cushing took third (57.17).
Anderson completed a rare double by following her win in the 1650y free with a victory in the 200y fly in 2:01.64. Sophomore Stina Gardell, like Anderson making her debut in the event this year, was second (2:04.71). Junior Chelsea Wild took third (2:05.65).
Junior Justin DiFederico and Badger Daniel Lester were nearly even after the first 100 of the men’s 200y fly, but DiFederico opened almost a second lead with 50 to go and went on to win in 1:48.96 to Lester’s 1:51.01. Wright was third (1:51.72).
Wisconsin’s Thompson won the 50y free in 23.15, nipping USC sophomore Kasey Carlson, who was second in 23.29. Martin was third (23.42). In the men’s 50, Lagerhausen won in 21.50, edging Trojan senior Jack Ostler (21.67) and Cushing (21.88).
Hawthorne led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200y IM with a win in 2:01.53 while senior Tanya Krisman was second (2:02.43) and Schmitt was third (2:03.43). In the men’s race, Weiss won in 1:51.18 while Lester was second (1:52.74).
USC’s 200y free women’s relay won in 1:33.34 as Trojan junior anchor Lindsay Parrish held off Wisconsin’s Thompson as the Badgers took second in 1:33.48. The Trojan men also squeaked out a win, 1:24.89 to 1:25.14, as Cushing had just enough to repel Badger Damon Zito at the wall.
In diving, senior Victoria Ishimatsu won the 3-meter with 325.43 points. Wisconsin's Roxanne Fitter was second (279.90).
