Washington and Lee Generals Lead on to Victories at F&M Quad Dual; Carnegie Steels 6 Victories

– The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming squads both defeated the University of Rochester and Franklin & Marshall while falling to Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon at the Franklin & Marshall quad dual.

The men defeated the University of Rochester, 186-76, and Franklin & Marshall, 210-52, but were defeated by Carnegie Mellon, 153-109. The women also defeated Rochester (160-102) and F&M (154-108), but were felled by Carnegie Mellon, 158-99.

The W&L men (5-3) were led by first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who concluded the day with two individual and one relay victory. Ireland swam the 100 breast in 1:01.12, while finishing with a time of 2:12.20 in the 200 breast. He also helped the 200 medley relay of sophomores Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) swim a top time of 1:38.38.

Other top-finishers for W&L were Sykes and junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville). Sykes touched in first in the 50 free (21.41) and second in the 100 free (48.36) in addition to swimming on the winning 200 medley relay and helping the 400 free relay to a second-place finish (3:17.09). He was joined on the 400 free relay by junior Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), first-year Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and Brian Stirling. Washnock was victorious in both the 100 back (54.22) and 200 back (1:55.84).

For the women, W&L (5-2) recorded two individual and one relay top finish. Individually, junior Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) recorded a time of 2:21.52 in the 200 back to while finishing the top spot, and also swam to a second-place finish in the 200 IM (2:17.73). The other individual top-finisher was first-year Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's), who touched in with a time of 2:16.63 in the 200 IM. Kasoff also tallied a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 fly (1:01.72), while helping the 200 medley relay squad of juniors Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and sophomore Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) finish third in a time of 1:55.23.

The 400 free relay squad of first-year Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), sophomore Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), Brassfield and first-year Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) recorded the top relay finish with a time of 3:44.41. Additionally, Rolfe swam the 200 free in a time of 1:59.09 to finish second, Brittany Ross touched in second in the 200 fly (2:13.92) and Fredericks also recorded a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:32.88).

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team swept results at the Franklin & Marshall Quad Meet on Saturday, November 20. The Tartans defeated the Diplomats 219-43, Washington & Lee 153-109 and the University of Rochester 203-59.

Sophomore Dan Glaser-Garbrick (Dayton, Ohio/Centreville), freshman Seijean Gahng (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens), freshman Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio) and junior Matt Stanton (Richboro, Pa./Council) opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:38.11. Senior Frank Olechnowicz (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Jefferson) then won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:02.54 as senior Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) was second in 10:02.78.

Freshman Josh Chen (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.51 as sophomore Brandon Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) was second in 1:46.03. Yee later won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.93 as Glaser-Garbrick was right behind him in 1:55.14.

Freshman Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.24 before the Tartans swept the 500-yard freestyle. Yee finished first in a time of 4:48.65, Olechnowicz was second in 4:52.38 as senior Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.) was third in 4:58.07.

Glaser-Garbrick ended the individual events with a win in the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:58.50 as Hanson was second in 1:59.86.

The 400-yard freestyle relay ended the meet with a win with a time of 3:14.65. Sears, Yee, Chen and Stanton combined to defeat Washington & Lee's first team by 2.43.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming team swept the quad meet at Franklin & Marshall College Saturday, November 20, defeating F&M 164-93, Washington & Lee 158-99 and the University of Rochester 163-94.

Freshman Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman), sophomore Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), freshman Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and senior Brianne Burton (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.51. Senior Molly Evans (Butler, Pa.) then won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:27.53 as Phan won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.83 and the 100-yard freestyle in 54.81.

Stillo led a sweep of the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.57 as freshman Vivian Wong (Saratoga, Calif./The Harker School) finished second in 1:09.51 and freshman Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy) finished third in 1:09.74.

Evans won her second event in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.59. Burton and Stillo finished 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 24.95 and 25.38.

Wong won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.59 as Evans won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.40.

Garvey finished first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 59.62 as junior Hannah Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was second in 1:01.46.
