Dwyer Leads National Swimmer Honors

Three individual victories by Melanie Margalis (University of Georgia) and three NCAA “B” cuts by Conor Dwyer (University of Florida) have earned the two the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Honors.  Also winning the honors were Sonia Arau (University of Bridgeport), Florian Mehlan (University of Bridgeport), David Chao (Washington University in St. Louis), and Michele Kee (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges).  The six recipients were selected by coaches and media relations personnel for their performances October 26-November 1. 


Division I

Melanie Margalis
Georgia
Freshman- Clearwater, Fla.
In Georgia’s 180-120 victory over Florida, Margalis won three events.  She swam the 100 breaststroke (1:02.73), the 200 breaststroke (2:14.32) and the 200 IM (1:57.62).  Margalis also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:41.82).  Behind Margalis, Georgia won for the 72nd straight time at Gabrielsen Natatorium, a streak that dates back to the 1995-96 season.


Conor Dwyer
University of Florida
Senior- Winnetka, Ill.
In Florida’s 170-130 victory over Georgia, Dwyer placed first in three individual events, and also achieved three NCAA “B” cuts.  He won the 1000 free (9:00.48, the nation’s top time this season), 200 free (1:37.77, NCAA “B” cut), 500 free (4:25.26, NCAA “B” cut), and was also a member of the winning 400 free relay (2:59.27, NCAA “B” cut).


Division II
Sonia Arau
University of Bridgeport
Freshman- Barcelona, Spain
Arau Won the 200-meter IM with the fastest time in Division II so far this season (2:23.29, NCAA "B" cut) and 100-meter back (1:06.38, NCAA "B" cut).  She also swam the backstroke leg (31.23- split) on the winning 200-meter Medley Relay (2:06.22) in a 106-80 win over Queens College.


Florian Mehlan
University of Bridgeport
Freshman- Moers, Germany
Mehlan Won three events and set two school records this past weekend.  He won the 100-meter Freestyle (53.58), the 200-meter Freestyle in (1:55.57, NCAA "B" cut and school record) and the 400-meter Freestyle (4:12.56, school record) in a 104–87 win over Queens College.


Division III
Michele Kee
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges
Freshman- Diamond Bar, CA
Kee swam to victory in the 100 fly (58.32), and also finished second in the 100 breast (1:08.14).  Her 100 fly time is currently second fastest in the country this season.  She anchored the 200 medley relay (24.13- free split) which posted an overall time of 1:50.22 and also swam on the 400 free relay (53.69- split) which finished in 3:37.78.  These performances came in a 189-103 loss to UC-San Diego.


David Chao
Washington University
Senior- Paoli, Pa.
Chao won the 200-freestyle (1:44.98) and the 100 freestyle (47.62), while finishing second in the 50 freestyle (21.62) as WashU finished first at the Centre College Midwest Classic.  In addition, he swam the final leg for the first-place 400-freestyle relay team (3:10.91).
