Washington & Jefferson Sweeps Hiram

The Washington & Jefferson College men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads closed the dual-meet portion of their schedule with a sweep of Hiram College on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Henry Memorial Center. 
 
The Presidents’ men (6-5) recorded a 131-103 victory, while the women’s squad finished with an 8-4 record after a 158-113 triumph. 
 
Sophomore C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) earned four victories on the afternoon for the women’s squad.  She touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:02.89) and 200 freestyle (2:04.41), while lead the 200 medley (1:57.32) and 200 freestyle (1:46.06) relays to victories. 
 
Juniors Kyra Fedorovich (McKeesport, Pa./South Allegheny) and Andi Wirginis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and sophomore Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) joined Corcoran on the 200 medley relay and then grabbed wins of their own. 
 
Fedorovich, who also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay, claimed first place in the 100 freestyle (57.52), while Wirginis won the 500 freestyle (5:33.19).  Vogel notched a pair of wins, earning the 100 backstroke (1:02.76) and 400 IM (4:53.02). 
 
Sophomore diver Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) and freshman Jami Andrews’ (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) both tacked on two victories.  Andrews swept both the breaststroke events, turning in a 100 time of 1:11.65 and a 200 mark of 2:36.03.  Haver garnered 233.85 points on the 1-meter board and 223.05 points on the 3-meter platform. 
 
The men’s squad was paced by senior Andrew Forish (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore Jonathan Weeks (Donora, Pa./Ringgold).  Forish helped the 200 freestyle relay win in a time of 1:41.35 and then posted a first-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:52.40).  He also helped the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.90) close the meet with a triumph. 
 
Weeks amassed individual victories in the 100 butterfly (55.04), 200 butterfly (2:00.33) and 100 freestyle (49.64). 
 
Junior Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) collected first place finishes in the 200 backstroke (2:04.76) and 400 IM (4:22.56). 
 
W&J has nearly three weeks to prepare for the 2010 PAC Championships which will be hosted by Grove City (Feb. 18-20).
