Washington & Jefferson Sweeps Penn State-Behrend

Washington & Jefferson College swept Penn-State Behrend in a non-conference swimming and diving dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.  The Presidents’ women (7-4) notched a 159-119 victory, while the men’s squad (5-5) cruised to a 182-112 triumph.

The afternoon was highlighted by a pair of record-setting performances, including freshman Katlin Dagg (Mentor, Ohio/Hawken) who touched first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:14.33, breaking the old pool record (2:14.90) set by a Hiram swimmer in 2006.

The men’s 200 medley relay team, consisting of seniors Andrew Forish (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield)  and Mark Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), sophomore Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and freshman Joe Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), also set a new pool record with a time of 1:40.15.  The old mark was set in Head Coach Mike Orstein’s first year with the program (1989) by a Grove City College relay squad.

This week’s PAC Diver/Swimmer of the Week, sophomore Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone), continued her recent string of dominance on the 1- and 3-meter diving boards.  She won the 1-meter event with a score of 239.60 and collected 236.00 points during the 3-meter triumph.

Sophomore C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) earned victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.46) and 500 free (5:33.59), while Dagg also picked up a pair of victories after winning the 100 butterfly as well in a time of 1:03.51.

Junior Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the men’s squad with three victories on the afternoon after winning the 200 free (1:49.08), 200 backstroke (2:05.46) and the 200 IM (2:04.21).

Sophomore Jonathan Weeks (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) also earned a trio of victories for the Red & Black, winning the 200 butterfly (2:01.65), 100 free (49.58) and 100 butterfly (55.01).

The Presidents return to the Henry Memorial Natatorium for Senior Day next Saturday afternoon, hosting Hiram College at 1:00 pm on Senior Day.
