Senior Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) and junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) each had two wins to help the Vermont swimming and diving team defeat Central Connecticut State on the road on Sunday afternoon, 161-139. The win was the Cats' second in as many days, as they improve to 8-4 on the year.
"I am proud of the way we performed today after competing against Dartmouth on Saturday. While Central had more first place finishes, it was our depth that prevailed and helped us earn the win," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.
Clark helped the Cats go 1-3-4 in the 200 free with a first place showing in a time of 1:55.90. Classmate Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) placed third in the event, while freshman Abby Mundt (Madison, Wis.) was fourth. Clark also finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.18.
Weaver swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 (59.22) and 200 (2:07.00). Sophomore Kaitlyn Evarts (Vergennes, Vt.) followed Weaver in second in the 100 and placed third in the 200 back. MacMillan earned Vermont's final individual win of the day in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:01.22. The Cats wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay with the team made up of Weaver, MacMillan, Mundt and Clark in a time of 3:38.14.
Vermont also earned 10-second place finishes on the day and has now defeated Central Connecticut State in each of the last three seasons. The Cats return to action on Saturday when they host Navy at 12 p.m.
Central Connecticut State
Freshman Taylor Friedmann broke the Jack Suydam Natatorium record in the 1,000 freestyle, but Central Connecticut State University dropped a 161-139 decision at home to the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon. Her time of 10:13.41 was a pool and freshman best in the CCSU record books and is the best time in the Northeast Conference so far this season.
Friedmann also scored points in two other events on Sunday. The freshman placed second in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.28 and took fourth in the 200 butterfly, touching in at 2:13.45. Fellow freshman Katie Lang took home gold medalist honors in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:08.78, and also won the 100 fly in CCSU season-best 58.97 seconds.
Lang, along with freshman Hannah Packer and sophomores Kristen Malski and Alex Czaplicki, won the 200 medley relay to open the meet. The Blue Devil squad recorded a time of 1:51.47 to win the event. Both Malski and Czaplicki also won two individual events this afternoon. Malski earned gold medalist honors in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, recording times of 1:08.18 and 2:28.75, respectively. Czaplicki won the 500 free and 200 individual medley. The sophomore touched in at 25.33 seconds in the freestyle sprint and won the 200 IM in 2:10.64. Czaplicki also took second place in the 100 free, recording a time of 54.72 seconds.
Both of the active CCSU divers won an event this afternoon. Sophomore Madison Vestergaard placed first in the three meter dive (221.10 points) and was fourth in the one meter event (198.45 points). Senior Kristen Rossi won on the one meter board (204.67 points) and placed fifth in the three meter event (185.47 points).
Central will continue dual meet action next week as they head on the road to take on the University of Miami on Saturday, January 16.
