Steve Webb

Head Coach

Webb comes to Rhodes after six years as an NCAA Division III head coach, most recently as the head coach for Occidental College the last three years. Prior to Occidental, Webb spent three years at Augsburg College (Minnesota). Before coaching collegiately, Webb was a high school and club swimming coach. He swam at St. Louis University for a year before transferring to Florida State University. "I'm thrilled to have Steve join the Rhodes Athletics family and lead our men's and women's swimming and diving programs," said Dean. "Steve is a tremendous recruiter and has enjoyed coaching success at multiple D3 institutions. I'm excited for the future of our program." "I couldn't be more excited to lead this great team next year," said Webb. "Throughout the interview process, I was very impressed with the entire athletic staff, the beautiful campus and most of all the student athletes that I got to meet. It was evident how much this team cares about each other, and I look forward to continuing to build on the great success the team has had." Webb is coming off two extremely successful head coaching stints. While at Occidental, the women's team placed third last season at the Southern Collegiate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships, tying for the best finish in over 30 years and earning the highest championship point total in program history. The team also broke nine records, had an Academic All-American, and an NCAA All-American honorable mention. The women's team finished 37th at the 2019 NCAA National Championship meet. The 2017-18 season was big for the men's squad who earned the highest point total in over 20 years at the 2019 SCIAC Championships. Webb helped coach Austin Lashley to an All-American finish (3rd) in the 100 Fly in 2018. That same year he also earned All-American Honorable Mention honors by finishing 15th in the 200 Fly. At Occidental, the team posted seven NCAA consideration cut times, broke 28 school records, had two Academic All-Americans, and two different swimmers earn All-American status. Both the men's and women's teams have achieved CSCAA Scholar All-America honors every semester Coach Webb has been at the helm, with the men's team GPA being 12th highest in the country in 2017. While at Augsburg, Webb led the women's team to the school's three highest finishes in program history and 37 individual school records. The team also earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honors every semester. Prior to his college coaching experience, Webb was a successful high school coach. In Minnesota he was the head boys coach at East Ridge HS for two seasons where he led them to a 17-1 dual-meet record and a Suburban East Conference Championship in 2012, and the head girls coach at Mounds View HS from 2010-13 where his program produced 11 NISCA All-Americans and 4 consecutive Top 6 finishes at the True Team State meet. Webb also coached girls swimming at Hudson H.S. in Wisconsin, sending five swimmers to the 2009 State Championship meet after placing third at sectionals. Webb competed collegiately at St. Louis University (2002-03) and then transferred to Florida State University where he graduated in 2007 with degrees in Applied Economics, and Political Science. At Florida State, he was a member of the presidential dean's list, and the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society, while also earning a varsity letter in swimming. At St. Louis University, he set school records in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle, and was an A-finalist at the Conference USA Championships in those races and in the 400 I.M. "I can't wait to get to work with them in the pool in less than two months, and help the team achieve all their great goals they have for this upcoming season," stated Webb. "Coming from a school that really put an emphasis on being a true student athlete, that is something I was looking for, and it is something Rhodes offers. It is also located in the vibrant city of Memphis, which is a great benefit for me and my family. I am excited to hit the ground running on the recruiting trail, and share to all the future recruits what makes Rhodes such a special place to call home." Steve, with his wife Tjersti Webb, have two sons (Steven Webb III and Ayden Webb), and dog Charlea.
