Carleton Press Release

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team traveled across town to face off against St. Olaf College in what would be the final dual meet of the season and Senior Day for both squads. The Knights won four events but came up short in the team score, falling, 188-91.

“Overall, a very strong meet from both of our teams,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “Lots of good performances from virtually everyone on the team, which is exactly what we like seeing prior to taper. The men battled hard, and I am proud of the tenacity they showed. I think the teams were especially inspired by the senior class whose leadership has been outstanding throughout the season but especially today.”

The team’s “Can of Corn” award was given to the seven seniors on the roster: Alex Claman (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Academy); Alex Mathson (Verona, Wis./Verona); Josh Pitkofsky (San Carlos, Calif./Sequoia); Aaron Reynolds (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge); Aaron Schwab (Elk River, Minn./Elk River); Grant Terrien (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy); and Seth Waag-Swift (Middlefield, Mass./Monument Mountaint Regional)

Mathson got the day started the right way, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:05.84. He later took the top spot as well in the 500-yard freestyle with another season-best mark of 4:54.58. Mathson also finished second in the 200 yard IM, this time reaching the wall at 2:04.52.

Jack Dalluge (Fy./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) added to a successful start for the Knights with his top finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.10).

Colin Lau (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) secured the other event victory for the Knights, as he took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 53.53. He nearly picked up a second win but was edged out by 0.01 seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Carleton’s next competition will be the two-day Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 3-4 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Seniors Maria Wetzel (Salem, Ore./West Salem) and Alex Braiedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) combined to win four individual events and contributed to a pair of relay victories as the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving defeated St. Olaf College, 170-124, in a Senior Day dual meet.

The Knights won a total of 12 events en route to their first dual meet victory over the Oles since Jan. 30, 2010.

“Overall, very strong meet from both of our teams,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “Lots of good performances from virtually everyone on the team, which is exactly what we like seeing prior to taper. Beating a talented team from St. Olaf is a well-deserved victory and a huge confidence boost for the meets to come. I think the teams were especially inspired by the senior class whose leadership has been outstanding throughout the season but especially today.”

The team’s “Can of Corn” award was given to the seven seniors on the roster: Braiedy; Allie Clark (Northfield, Minn./Northfield); Sarah Magid (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy); Chloe Rouhandeh (New York, N.Y./Dalton School); Camille Sanchez (Nogent-sur-Marne, France/Lycee Prive Albert de Mun); Masha Toulokhonova (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto); and Wetzel.

As they have done frequently this season, the Knights started the racing portion of the meet by turning in the top performance in the 200-yard medley relay. Wetzel, Braiedy, Ada Meyer (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), and Caroline Mather (So./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) clocked a time of 1:51.81. Once again, all four also notched individual wins during the meet.

Wetzel picked up solo victories in the 100-yard backstroke (59.56), 200-yard backstroke (2:06.31), and 200-yard IM (season best 2:11.44). Meyer was first to the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.75) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.49). Mather won the short sprints, clocking times of 24.52 for the 50-yard freestyle and 54.02 in the 100-yard freestyle. Braiedy held off her challenger for a 0.4 seconds victory in the 100-yard butterfly and finished a close second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.82).

Diver Amy Roach (Jr./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) extended her win streak, as she put up the top scores on both boards for her fourth consecutive competition. She totaled 159.60 points on the 1-meter board and 200.10 points at the three-meter height.
