Bridgeport Triumphs Over Assumption

The University of Bridgeport women's swimming team closed out a busy weekend of action with its final home meet of the 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon in the Wheeler Recreation Center, and the Purple Knights cruised to a 161-101 dual meet win over the visiting Assumption College Greyhounds.  As a team, UB took first place in 12 of the 14 events that took place on Saturday.

Newcomer, sophomore Oksana Marchuk (Mlyniv, Ukraine) continued to impress in her early going of her Bridgeport career winning three events versus Assumption, taking first place in the 200 Butterfly (2:21.90), the 100 Fly (1:06.97) and the 200 IM (2:27.87).

Junior Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) took first place in the 800 Freestyle (9:15.89) and the 400 Free (4:33.37), and graduate student Jera Majeric (Prevalje, Slovenia) also won two events taking first in the 100 Backstroke (1:06.38) and the 200 Back (2:25.58).

Also picking up individual event wins for the UB women on Saturday were sophomore Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) in the 200 Freestyle (2:11.05), junior Rebeka Repman (Sombor, Serbia) in the 50 Free (20.81) and senior Yekaterina Gakhokidze (Almaty, Kazakhstan) in the 100 Free (59.97).

The Assumption College women's swimming & diving team fell 161-101 to No. 20 Bridgeport this afternoon in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Freshman Kelsey Johnstone (Southwick, Mass. / Westfield) was the only Hound to record a win on the day, as the freshman won both the 100 meter breaststroke and the 200 meter breaststroke.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Johnstone was the top performer on the day for Assumption, as the freshman raced her way to first place finishes in the 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke with times of 1:18.44 and 2:49.50, respectively.

- Sophomore Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) registered a pair of second place finishes, placing second in the 800 meter freestyle in 9:28.54, as well as the the 400 meter freestyle in 4:38.32.

- Junior Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) also recorded pair of runner-up finishes in both the 200 meter back (2:28.26) and the 200 meter IM (2:30.97). Senior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) finished third in the 800 meter free with a time of 9:53.51 and third in the 200 meter fly, clocking in at 2:31.38.

- The 200 meter medley relay team of Morgan, sophomore Mikayla Campbell (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield), freshman Natalia Kaczor (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) and sophomore Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon) swam their way to a second place finish with a time of 2:07.15.

- In the 400 meter freestyle relay, Kaczor, Nicholls, freshman Abbey Holmes (Laurel, MD / Archbishop Spalding) and senior Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) finished in second place with a time of 4:13.03.
