Missouri Hosts Tiger Invite

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 15/13 Mizzou men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded regular season competition at the two-day Tiger Invite, Jan. 27-28, at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. Over the course of the meet, 16 different Tigers claimed event wins, including four who earned two apiece. 

The meet was Missouri’s final action until the 2017 Southeastern Conference Championships, Feb. 14-18, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Junior Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minnesota) picked up a pair of wins Friday evening in both the 500 and 1650 free. She clocked a 4:45.41 to win the 500 free and went 16:24.63 in the 1650 free. Additionally, junior Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky) took second in the 500 free in a career-best 4:46.19, an NCAA ‘B’ time.

Other double winners in the meet included junior Hannah Stevens (Lexington, Ohio), sophomore Iliana Jones (Casper, Wyoming) and freshman Nick Alexander (Crestwood, Missouri).

Stevens earned top honors in both the 100 back (52.22) and 100 free (52.22). Jones swam to first-place finishes in the 50 free (23.27) and 100 breast (1:04.16) and Alexander won both the 200 IM (1:47.59) and 200 back (1:44.43).

In other Friday competition, senior Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Germany) earned a win in the 200 IM (1:59.54), sophomore Luke Mankus (Keller, Texas) posted a 19.99 to claim victory in the 50 free and freshman Giovanny Lima(Sao Paulo, Brazil) won the 500 free in 4:26.21, which ranks 10th all-time in Mizzou history.

On Saturday, the Tigers claimed men’s and women’s sweeps in the 100 fly, 200 breast and 200 fly races. Junior Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colorado) touched first in the women’s 100 fly (53.54) and freshman Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Illinois) won the men’s race (47.66).

In the 200 fly, freshman Azra Avdic (Skokie, Illinois) clocked a personal-best 1:58.04 to win the women’s race, while senior Martin Wallace (Broomfield, Colorado) earned the men’s win in 1:45.58.

Seniors Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Germany) and Ellie Suek (Eden Prairie, Minnesota) swept the 200 breast events. Schwingenschlogl touched the wall in 1:58.67 for the win, while Suek went 2:16.42 to win the women’s race.

Additionally, senior Carter Griffin (Parker, Colorado) won the 100 back (47.47), sophomore Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) won the 100 free (44.76) and sophomore Alex Walton (Wilton, Iowa) won the 400 IM (3:56.10).
