FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State defeated San Jose State on Saturday afternoon in the Fresno State Aquatics Center. This was the first time the Bulldogs have defeated the Spartans in 14 years.

The last time Fresno State beat San Jose State in a dual meet was Feb. 8, 2003 (180-120).

The Bulldogs improve to 6-3 on the season and 1-1 against Mountain West opponents.

"We are really excited about this win," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "This is the first time in my career at Fresno State that we have beat San Jose State. We swam really well and raced really hard today. We saw the kind of progress that we like to see at the end of the season going into the conference tournament. We have another meet tomorrow so we have to come back out and race just as well."

In the 200 Medley Relay, the Fresno State relay team of Ugne Mazutaityte, Manuela Mendolicchio, Esme Gullick and Katelin Britton took second place with a time of 1:45.63.

Mazutaityte had a first place finish in the 1000 Freestyle (10:22.75) for the second consecutive dual meet. Emily Niles finished right behind in second place with a time of 10:29.50. This gave the Bulldogs a 19-17 lead over the Spartans.

Hunter Winslow (1:54.24) and Katelin Britton (1:54.59) finished in second and third place in the 200 Freestyle for the Bulldogs, respectively. The Spartans retook the lead during the 200 Freestyle (29-26).

As for the 100 Backstroke, Gullick led the Bulldogs with a first place finish (57.51).

Mendolicchio remains undefeated in dual meets in the 100 Breaststroke recording a first place finish with a time of 1:04.40.

The Fresno State duo of Kimberly Harbert (2:04.71) and Gabbie Libang (2:06.67) finished in first and second place in the 200 Butterfly, respectively.

Hannah Jarvis recorded a third place finish in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.19.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the 200 Backstroke (98-90) when they took first, second and third place. Mazutaityte finished first with a time of 2:04.83, Gullick was behind in second with a time of 2:06.18 and Monnich cleaned up the top three in third place with a time of 2:09.18.

The Bulldogs never gave up the lead after the 200 Backstroke.

As for the 200 Breaststroke, Fresno State recorded the top three times. Manuela Mendolicchio (2:18.91) finished in first place, followed by Lucy Davies (2:23.48) in second and Hailee Baldwin (2:24.07) in third.

Mazutaityte lead the Bulldogs in the 500 Freestyle with a first place finish and a time of 5:01.71. Niles finished in second place with a time of 5:07.43, followed by Winslow in third place with a time of 5:07.48.

"Ugne Mazutaityte had her best meet of the year for us," said Fleck. "She had three first place finishes today and that was huge for us today."

Libang took second place for Fresno State in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 57.28.

In the 200 IM, the Bulldogs finished in the top three positions for the third time during the meet. Gullick finished in first place with a time of 2:07.40, Davies took second place with a time of 2:09.93 and Mendolicchio followed in third place with a time of 2:10.02.

The last event of the meet was the 200 Freestyle Relay. The Fresno State team of Ally Short, Kali Conlon, Hannah Jarvis and Tarryn Rennie finished in first place (1:36.35) in a nail biter edging out San Jose State by .03 seconds. This was the first time this season that the Bulldogs recorded a first place finish in this event.

On the boards, freshman Serena Sedillo took first place on the 3-Meter recording a career-best of 304.20. Shelbie Holden finished in third place (286.20) and Kelli Funk followed in fourth place (260.70).

Kelli Funk led the Bulldogs on the 1-Meter with a second place finish and a score of 266.03. Shelbie Holden followed in third place (256.13) and Serena Sedillo finished in fifth place (253.28).

"The divers did great today," said head diving coach Taryn Patrick. "All three of the divers were consistent on both boards. We hope to come out and perform just as well tomorrow on Senior Day."

The Bulldogs return home to celebrate Senior Day Sunday Jan. 29 against UC Davis at 12 p.m. PT in the Fresno State Aquatics Center. Senior Day activities will begin at 11:45 a.m. PT. This meet will conclude the Bulldogs regular season campaign.
