LSU Press Release

BATON ROUGE- Haylee Knight, Kara Kopcso and Lizzie Cui won an individual event apiece on day one of the quad meet between Houston, Rice and Tulane at the LSU Natatorium. The ‘A’ relay teams for the 200 medley and 400 free relay also picked up wins in their respective events.

Through one day of competition, LSU leads Houston 127-59, leads Rice 110-73, and holds a lead over Tulane 143-42. The women’s team will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the final day of the meet.

“I think the women were excited to come out and compete,” said head swimming coach Dave Geyer. “It’s good to get the relays started the way we did, and I think they carried some of that momentum throughout the day. It’ll be interesting to see if we can keep that energy up on the pool deck tomorrow with the second session.”

“Hopefully, they’ll get to sleep in tomorrow and come in a little more fresh and carry that momentum from today and see what we can do with that to finish out the meet.”

LSU opened up the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. Kate Zimmer, Colleen O’Neil, Kopcso and Knight took first with a time of 1:40.14. The relay squad of Makenna Wilson, Olivia Paskulin, Helen Grossman and Summer Spradley followed in second place at 1:44.14.

Knight notched a first-place finish in the 100 fly, posting a time of 54.20. In the 200 breaststroke, Catherine Lowengrub touched the wall second, clocking at 2:16.72.

Kopcso narrowly edged out Troskot for first place in the 200 free by tenths of a second, finishing with a time of 1:47.45 to Troskot’s 1:47.59. Kopcso’s time is a personal best and good for sixth on LSU’s all-time list in the event.

Angele Cherbonnier also earned second overall in the 50 free, posting a time of 23.99. In the 200 IM, Lauren Thompson and Nicole Rozier took second and third in order, coming in at 2:06.22 and 2:06.39 respectfully.

In the final swimming event of the night, the relay team of Troskot, Knight, Devon Dabney and Spradley grabbed first in the 400 free relay, timing out at 3:19.56.

For the diving team, Lizzie Cui dove to a career high on one-meter with a score of 325.65, taking first place and moving to third overall on the LSU’s all-time list on one-meter. Rileigh Knox also picked up a zone score and personal best of 274.70, coming in second in the event.

Cui garnered second overall on three-meter with a score of 324.50. Makayla Robillard and Knox also finished third and fourth, logging scores of 281.80 and 277.40 respectfully.

In the exhibition dives for the LSU men’s team, Juan Celaya-Hernandez took first on both one and three-meters, diving to a whopping score of 442.70 on three-meter. Andrew Suchla placed second in both events with a score of 327.45 on one-meter and 381.30 on three-meter.

“I told them after the first day of this competition that they are exactly where I want them to be,” said head diving coach Doug Shaffer. “I don’t want them peaking, but I want to see good performances, and I want to see things that are on the edge. If we’re going to be making mistakes, I want them to make positive mistakes and get those things out of the way now, and I saw that today.”

“The men diving in exhibition was a way for them to compete within themselves but also to get another competitive experience under their belts. There’s a lot of positive that I can take away from today.”
