Akron Press Release

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron women's swimming and diving team broke a pair of MAC records on Friday night at Ocasek Natatorium in day one of the double-dual meet against Bowling Green and Youngstown State.

Following day one's action, the Zips hold a 93-17 advantage against both the Falcons and Penguins.

In the first event of the night, the 400 medley relay, the quartet of sophomore Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), junior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), sophomore Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and sophomore Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) toppled the school, pool and MAC records with a fleeting time of 3:35.65.

Myers swam the 100 back leg of the relay and broke her own school and MAC records with a blazing time of 52.76, topping the mark of 52.93 that she had set at the Zippy Invite in December.

Marrero Munoz posted an impressive 59.97 split in the 100 breaststroke leg of the relay.

The team of senior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland), sophomore Victoria Shaffer (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), junior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) and senior Laura Savriau (Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, France) posted a time of 3:44.09 to finish second in the 400 medley relay.

Myer also captured a win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.06 and was followed by freshmen Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) and Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio) as the Zips swept the top three spots in the event.

Fazekas broke a school record in the 50 freestyle as she touched the wall in a time of 22.54 while Engel (22.93) and Franz (23.27) finished second and third to give the hosts another 1-2-3 sweep.

The 22.54 from Fazekas marks the second fastest time in the MAC this season.

Senior Kara Kaulius (McDonald, Pa.) and sophomore Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle event for Akron and Kaulius registered the win with a time of 4:53.52.

Crail's performance allowed her to qualify for the NCAA Diving Zone Championships that will be held on March 9-10 in Bloomington, Ind., where she will join Kelkenberg who qualified earlier this season.

The Zips closed the night by taking home the top two spots in the 800 free relay as Nebraska, Savariau, Marrero Munoz and Pash finished in a time of 7:22.45.
