UNLV, UC Santa Barbara, Air Force Compete in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a pair of home meets this weekend, first dropping the Friday Night Shoot-Out to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, before claiming one of four meets on Saturday against Air Force and USCB again.

Friday night’s action, which featured a shorten lineup of events as well as some non-traditional distances, saw the Rebel women fall to the Gauchos by a 164-64 score, while UNLV's men lost by a 154-74 margin.

Two event winners highlighted the women's efforts. It began with Ida Schutt in the 300 free, as she won easily in a time of 2:55.51. Schutt then added a second-place finish in the 100 IM with a mark of 1:00.05. The other winner Friday night was Kristina Hendrick, posting first in the 200 IM, out-touching UCSB’s Catherine Boles by 2.14 seconds with a time of 2:06.50 and finishing second in the 50 breast with a time of 29.55.

The story on the men’s side was Tom Paco-Pedroni, claiming two wins. His first was in the 50 breast in a time of 26.20. Next, he swam the fourth leg of the 400 free relay, which topped the Gauchos in a time of 2:59.82. Joining him on the relay were Or Sabatier, Kasey Foley and Forrest Beesley.

“We need to come back today and be ready to swim at the upper limit of our capacity,” said head coach Ben Loorz after Friday’s competition. “The back-to-back meets present a challenging, yet real-life, opportunity for us to perform consistently on consecutive days. We are looking forward to a double-dual on Saturday that will put us up against our two best and oldest rivals.”

Day two for the Rebels concluded with seven victories highlighted by the Rebel women defeating Air Force 156-141. They would go on to lose to UCSB 159.50-126.50, while the men fell to USCB 173-120 and 191-109 to the Falcons.
“Hats off to really strong UCSB and Air Force teams, they have excellent squads, said Loorz after the results on Saturday. “Our women really stepped up at the end, and showed a lot of grit in our race with Air Force. It was really nice racing at the end of a long weekend.”

The Rebel women’s first win came from Alyssa Arnett with a score of 266.40 on the 1m board, while Mykayla Fielding claimed second (249.45). Fielding would go on to capture first in the 3m board (274.88) and Arnett finished second (265.50). The final woman to get a victory was Kristina Hendrick in the 400 IM, hustling with a time of 4:29.41. Schuett (4:31.89) and Kimberly Hendrick (4:34.50) finished two-three behind Kristina Hendrick.

On the men’s side, Paco-Pedroni was at it again capturing two wins on the day. He would outtouch Air Force by .53 seconds in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.10 and also claimed a win in the 100 free (44.24).

The men's other first place swim came from Robert Morgan in the 1m board (278.93), his first win on the 1m board, while Kasey Foley claimed first overall in the 50 free with a time of 20.59.

The night closed out on a 200 free relay. Foley, Sabatier, Beesley and Paco-Pedroni finished second in a very thrilling race between the three teams that saw the UNLV squad finish second by just .01 seconds in 1:21.45.

Air Force Press Release

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Air Force men’s swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets  in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday, Jan. 21. The Falcons defeated conference rival UNLV, 171-112, but fell to UC Santa Barbara, 146-131.  Air Force is 9-1 overall this season.

In the first event of the meet, the team of Devon Davis, Zach Knoche, Steffen Mount and Lars Knutson won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:29.56. Senior Andrew Faciszewski placed second in the 1650 free (15:49.82) and was second in the 400 IM (4:03.30). Senior Jordan Dahle was second in the 200 free (1:39.63)

The Falcons took four of the top five places in the 100 back as Devon Davis was second (48.91), Joey Gebhart (50.91) was third, Cole McAnany (50.97) was fourth and Kris Tillery (51.37) was fifth.

Knoche won two individual events on the day, taking the 100 breast stroke (55.33) and the 200 breast stroke (2:01.80).

In diving, Nicholas Piontek won the one-meter with 271.13 points while A.J. Eckebrecht was third (249.15).  Eckebrecht won the three-meter (268.95) while Piontek was second (258.90).

In the final event of the meet, the team of Mount, Knutson, Michael Hannigan and Dahle won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:21.44.

The men’s diving team hosts the annual Air Force Diving Invitational, Jan. 27-28, at the Cadet Natatorium. The meet starts at 9 a.m. each day. The men’s swimming team is back in action with a dual meet at the University of Denver on Jan. 28.
 
 
Falcon women fall to UNLV in dual meet

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Air Force women’s swimming and diving team fell in a dual meet to UNLV, 136-125, on Saturday, Jan. 21, in Las Vegas, Nev. Air Force fell to 7-5 overall this season. UC Santa Barbara also competed in the meet.

Genevieve Miller won the 1650 free (17:11.24), the 500 free (4:58.56) and the 200 free (1:52.11). In the 50 free, Lydia Knutson was second with a time of 24.01. Jinan Andrews was third in the 100 free 53.02. Emma Strom was third in the 200 back stroke 2:07.53

In diving, Isabella Farrell was third on one-meter with 228.45 points while Kayla Wofford was fourth with 217.95 points. In three-meter, Wofford was third (247.28) while Becca Hetrick was fourth (242.03).

The women’s diving team hosts the annual Air Force Diving Invitational, Jan. 27-28, at the Cadet Natatorium. The meet starts at 9 a.m. each day. The women’s swimming team is back in action with a dual meet at the University of Denver on Jan. 28.
