CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team lead all three duals after day one of their tri-meet with Cincinnati and the Rutgers women’s squad on Friday. The No. 25 men lead the Bearcats, 125-42, while the No. 23 H2Okie women lead Cincinn! ati, 122.5-44.5, and Rutgers, 93-74.

The meet resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the senior day ceremony occurring before the final event of the day, the 400 free relay.

“Strong start for us tonight. I really enjoyed watching our team interact and the energy on the deck was very high,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “Some of our newcomers look strong - Leah Rogers, Chloe Hicks, Hassler Carroll and Simon Shi - are really emerging for us. Miranda Eberle on the boards has been strong as well.:

PERFORMERS OF THE DAY
-The H2Okies saw some impressive performances from their relays. The women’s A relay in the 200 free registered a first place time of 1:34.47 which was only a second off their seed time. In total, Tech won three of the four relays on the day.
-Junior Justin Edwards swam a 56.04 to take first in the 100 breast and freshman Simon Shi followed with a PR 56.73.
-Freshman Hassler Carroll and junior Chris Grimmett-Norris finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 fly. Carroll swam a 151.60 and Norris finished with a 1:52.36
-All five men’s divers finished in the top five in the one meter with junior T.J. Shinholser leading the way with a score of 349.40.

OTHER NOTABLE SWIMS
-Sophomore Ashlynn Peters finished second against divers from Rutgers and Cincinnati in the three meter with a score of 313.55.
-In the 200 back, freshman Chloe Hicks turned in a strong swim with a time of 2:00.42 to finish second.
-Freshman Miranda Eberle set a new career-high in the three meter with a score of 287.40 to place fourth out of 10 divers.
-Senior Laura Schwartz nearly set a new personal best in the 100 breast with a second place time of 1:03.84. M.J Ulrich placed third with a 1:05.27.
-Seniors Fiona Donnelly took first in the 200 IM and classmate Jessica Hespeler won the 500 free to help the H2Okies to early leads in the meet score.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (Jan. 20, 2017) – Rutgers swimming and diving captured four individual wins and a relay victory during session one of its tri-meet with Cincinnati and Virginia Tech Friday night in Christiansburg, Virginia.

In team action, RU leads the Bearcats, 109-58, and trails the Hokies by just 19 points, 93-74.

Senior Rachel Stoddard and sophomores Vera Koprivova and Francesca Stoppa all hit the wall first in their respective events, while reigning Big Ten Diver of the Week Addison Walkowiak placed first in the 3-meter dive. The Scarlet Knights also secured a win in the 400 medley relay in the first night of action at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Stoddard just missed a NCAA B cut in the 100 breaststroke, as the Hillsborough, New Jersey, native finished first in the event with a time of 1:02.92. Stoddard also contributed a second-place result in the 200 IM at 2:06.22.

Koprivova represented RU in the 200 backstroke with her first-place time of 1:59.37. Stoppa contributed a first-place time of 2:02.65 in the 200 butterfly to conclude Rutgers’ impressive individual showing in the pool.

Off the boards, Walkowiak contributed a NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 331.90 to place first in the 3-meter dive. This is her second straight win in the event in as many weeks, as the Ballston Spa, New York, native also won against Penn State and Yale last weekend. Senior Alyssa Black finished third with a score of 292.55, and sophomore Rachel Byrne placed sixth with her mark of 280.60. Both results were also NCAA Zone qualifying scores.

In relay action, Koprivova, Stoddard, Stoppa and freshman Alexandra Fabugais-Inaba clocked in at 3:46.85 in the 400 medley relay, good for first. Fabugais-Inaba, Stoddard, junior Karli Rymer and freshman Clare Lawlor placed third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.56.

Other notable appearances for the Scarlet Knights included senior Meghan Kiely’s fourth-place result of 52.93 in the 100 freestyle and newcomer Federica Greco’s fourth-place time of 2:04.66 in the 200 fly. For Greco, it marked her Rutgers and collegiate debut.
