Saint Andrew's Closes Out UNC-Pembroke

LAURINBURG, NC – The St. Andrews University Swim team hosted nearby Div. II UNC-Pembroke during their senior day swim meet on Thursday afternoon. The men swam time trials to qualify for NAIA Nationals while the women edged first-year team Pembroke by a score of 361-310.

Sophomore Sebastian Riano (SO/Bogota, Colombia) qualified for nationals by winning the 200 freestyle in a NAIA qualifying time of 1:47.66. Riano also won the 200 Breaststroke in 2:14 and the 50 yard breaststroke in 28 seconds even. Other men performing well and winning events were senior Max Hamilton (SR/Columbia, SC) in the 200 IM in 2:02, senior Georgi Krastev (SR/Pinellas Park, FL) in the 200 Butterfly (2:03), freshman Juan Patino (FR/Cali, Colombia) in the 50 free (21.8), senior Cameron Dixon (SR/Gerrardstown, WV) in the 100 yard free (49.68), and also Patino again in the 50 Fly in 24.82.

Winning events for the women were freshman Chiara Knebelkamp (FR/Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany) in 2:07 in the 200 Free while junior Choolwe Lourens (JR/Lusaka, Zambia) handily won the 50 Free in 25.7.

Junior Tarryn Holmes (JR/Johannesburg, South Africa) then took the 100 Butterfly title in 1:00 while senior Xiomara Getrouw (SR/Paramaribo, Suriname) won the 100 Backstroke in 1:01.62. Knebelkamp then swam a good time in the 100 Breast as she finished in 1:11.4 to take first while also winning the 50 Breast in 32.76. Getrouw also won the 50 Backstroke in 28.09.

Holmes also dominated the 50 Fly finishing in 28.59 while taking the 500 Free in 5:48.

The SAU women improve to 2-5 on the year while the UNCP women fall to 1-8.

St. Andrews will next travel to another Div. II foe, Mars Hill University (N.C.), next Saturday for a 2 PM meet.
