West Florida Sweeps Birmingham Southern, Sewanee

West Florida Press Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a Senior Day win against Ouachita Baptist last weekend, the University of West Florida women’s swimming and diving team continued its winning ways in the Spring season on Friday. In a double-dual meet at Birmingham Southern, the Argonauts took down meet host BSC 181-103 and defeated fellow visitor Sewanee 191-91.

Junior Madeline Pitt stood out for UWF in her two events, beating the field in the 500 Free by 16 seconds and recording the second-fastest 200 Fly time in program history, at 2:06.79. Senior Theresa Michalak took the individual crown in the 200 Fly at 2:06.15, while fellow senior Allison Lehr finished third to give West Florida all three podium spots in the event.

UWF matched that feat in two other races on the day as well, including the 200 Free (Carla Robles, Lauren Harper, Mariana de Paula) and the 100 Backstroke (Nicole Machado, Taby Read-Cayton, Pia Hulley).

It was also a banner day for UWF’s freshmen. Brooke Ferrara took first place in all three of her events, as the Pensacola native and Washington HS product took the lead leg in UWF’s 200 Medley Relay win to begin the day, won the 50 Free at 25.01, and won the 100 Fly (1:01.85).

Sophie Roy swam the second leg in the 200 Medley Relay, following Ferrara, and took the 100 Breast (1:11.28), while Lauren Johnson put together the third leg of the 200 Medley Relay-winning team and swam the second-fastest leadoff leg in the 200 Free Relay to conclude the day. Read-Cayton took the 100 Free (55.01) and finished second in the 100 Back (1:02.99).

Senior Monica Amaral claimed the title in both diving events, with a 262.15 in the 1-meter and a 270.71 in the 3-meter, while fellow senior Meghan Zetz finished second in the 1-meter at 227.10.

In all, UWF had winners in 15 of the 16 events in which the team competed, with West Florida’s top-finishing 200 Free Relay team coming in just 0.23 seconds away from a win in the final event.

The Argonauts will wrap up their regular-season schedule with a double-dual meet against Emory and Delta State in Atlanta next Saturday, January 21. The team will then head to Cleveland, Mississippi, from February 15-18 in search of a third consecutive NSISC Championship.
