SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - In the first of two meets this weekend, Pacific's men's and women's teams defeated Cal Poly handily, with the men winning 167.5-130.5 and the women winning 172-125 in the 32-event meet. The Tigers won 21 of the 28 non-diving events on the day.
The day started with the Tigers sweeping the 200 Medley Relay, taking first and second in both the men's and women's events. Cai Hong Singh, Whitney Jorgensen, Kenna Ramey, and Vaiva Gimbutyte took the women's side, finishing in 1:43.82. That was several seconds ahead of the team of Isabella Green, Angela Gagliardo, Taylor Hosmer, and Meredith Lillie, who swam a 1:47.05 to take second place.
For the men, it was Makoa Haneberg, Yahav Shahaf, Jared Vu, and Dylan Toy winning the event in 1:29.37. Angel Alcala, Brandon Reno, Stewart Harrison, and Mitchell Ongstad finished in 1:30.97, two seconds ahead of third place.
Hosmer, Becca Aguilar, and Jilling Hatch swept the 200 Free for the Tigers, finishing 1-2-3. Hosmer led the bunch at 1:52.08, with Aguilar hot on her heels at 1:52.69. Hatch was right behind them at 1:53.26 as the three beat the rest of the field by at least a second. Hosmer would later win the 500 Free with her 5:03.75 while teammate Brigid McNally took second at 5:07.05.
Curtis Klein and Miles MacKenzie finished 1-2 in the 200 Free as well with times of 1:40.10 and 1:40.27. That helped the Tigers along as they won ten of the first 11 events on the day. Klein would add a win in the 200 Back later with his 1:52.65 time.
Fresh off the relay win, Singh took the 100 Back for the Tigers with her time of 57.72, more than a second ahead of second place. Singh would also take second in the 200 Back later in the day with her 2:07.63.
Haneberg won the men's side of the 100 Back with a 50.26. Haneberg was followed closely by teammates Toy (51.28) and Neil Franka (52.00) to give Pacific another sweep of the top three spots.
Pacific would win both the men's and women's 100 Breast as well. For the men, Shahaf's 55.79 time bested second place by almost two full seconds while Jorgensen swam a 1:04.94 to comfortable win by half a second over teammate Gagliardo, who swam a 1:05.43. Head Coach Peter Richardson praised Gagliardo's day, saying that the freshman "swam great all day."
Jorgensen and Gagliardo also finished 1-2 in the 200 Breast and the 200 IM, with Jorgensen's 2:19.93 in the 200 Breast just barely ahead of Gagliardo's 2:19.99. In the 200 IM, Jorgensen swam a 2:07.03 to Gagliardo's 2:08.08.
Alcala and Vu picked up some more points for Pacific in the 200 Fly with their top three finishes. Alcala took second place with a 1:51.57 while Vu swam a 1:56.11 to tie for third place.
The 50 Free saw four Tigers in the top three, taking first and second on both the men's and women's sides. Kenna Ramey, swimming in her first event of the day, won with a 23.58 ahead of Gimbutyte, who swam a 24.23. Ongstad beat out Harrison on the men's side to win, swimming a 20.37. Harrison took second with a 20.77, just barely behind.
Ongstad would also win the 100 Free, this time beating MacKenzie by just two-hundredths of a second for the victory. Ongstad swam a 45.82 while MacKenzie had a 45.84.
The women would sweep the 100 Free, actually finishing with the top four times. Hatch won the event with a 52.42, just touching out Gimbutyte's 52.45. Lillie swam a 52.98, while Aguilar took fourth with her 53.13.
Hatch nearly won the 100 Fly as well but finished behind Ramey, settling for second place ahead of Singh's 57.44 third-place time. Ramey won that event with her 54.18 while Hatch had a 57.20.
The men also took first, second, and third in the 100 Fly. Harrison won it with his 48.89, followed by Haneberg (49.92) and Vu (50.46). Toy added another men's event win in the 200 IM with his 1:52.33. Second place went to Franka (1:52.42) while Klein (1:53.97) took third.
The day ended with two more relay wins for the Tigers, this time in the 400 Free. Aguilar, Gimbutyte, Hatch, and Lillie swam a 3:29.07 to win for the women while Lane Goedhart, Georan Meendering, Josh Owens, and Harrison swam a 3:03.96 for the men's win.
Both the Tiger men and women will be back in the pool on Sunday when they take on Santa Barbara and Loyola Marymount in Santa Barbara at 11:00 am.
