Ohio State Conquers Cincinnati Quad

Cincinnati, Ohio— Ohio State wrapped up its quad meet at the University of Cincinnati on Saturday, coming out on top in the four team field.

While the Buckeyes set one pool record during Friday’s competition, they tripled that total on Saturday with three new records set at Keating Aquatic Center.

Both relays achieved that feat; the meet-opening 400 medley relay had a time of 3:19.53, besting the previous pool record by almost three seconds. In the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, it was again an Ohio State foursome that came out on top, this time with a time of 3:00.11 Individually Josh Fleagle touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:38.64) en route to the best time the pool has seen in that event.

Three other Ohio State swimmers had first place finishes today. Ching Lim won the 200 IM with his time of 1:50.29; Matt McHugh won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 20.73; and Henrique Painhas won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.83, the second time he has won that event this season at a meet.

In the other three events, the top Buckeye finishers were as follows: Brayden Seal in the 1000 freestyle (9:10.36), Andrew Appleby in the 200 backstroke (1:52.47), and Andrew Lindstrom in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.27).

Next up for Ohio State is a dual meet against conference foe Michigan State in East Lansing. The meet takes place on Friday, Jan. 20. The following day the Buckeyes return home to face Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati, Ohio— From start to finish it was an excellent weekend for Ohio State’s women’s swimming team, who captured first place at a quad meet hosted by the University of Cincinnati.

A day after setting a whopping six pool records at Keating Aquatic Center, Buckeye swimmers set five more during Saturday’s competition.

In addition to the 400 freestyle relay team that posted a time of 3:23.80 (crushing the previous record by four seconds), Lindsey Clary, Meg Bailey, Liz Li, and Zulal Zeren all set new pool records today. Clary won the first individual event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, with a time of 9:57.50, the only swimmer to go sub-10:00 in that event. Right after her was Bailey, who placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.61. Li came out on top in the 50 freestyle, a familiar outcome for her, with a record-setting time of 22.76. Lastly Zeren swept the backstroke events with a win in the 200 yard variety today; her time of 2:00.80 is the fastest the pool has ever seen.

Even outside of the record setters, Ohio State had a fantastic day. It started out with a win in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:45.60, featured a second first place finish from Bailey and one from Taylor Vargo. Bailey won the final individual event of the meet, the 200 butterfly, thanks to her time of 2:00.67, which topped the second place finisher by five seconds. Vargo added another impressive breaststroke performance to her season, swimming 200 yards in 2:7.62. In the 200 freestyle, Ohio State’s Kathleen Cook was the team’s top finisher with a time of 1:52.81.

Next up for Ohio State is a dual meet against conference foe Michigan State in East Lansing. The meet takes place on Friday, Jan. 20. The following day the Buckeyes return home to face Akron and Pittsburgh.

CINCINNATI -- Paul Huch won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:50.28 followed closely by Aleksander Danielewski who placed runner-up at 1:51.26 as the Oakland men's and women's swim and dive teams finished third at the Cincinnati quad meet at the Keating Aquatics Center.

Jeremiah Morren placed runner-up in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.08 while Patricia Aschan swam to a pair of third place finishes in the 200 IM (2:05.95) and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.10). Both teams will return to the pool for senior day Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. against Michigan State.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords swimming and diving team wrapped up Saturday a two-day quad meet held at the University of Cincinnati. The Lords were up against three NCAA Division I opponents and wound up in fourth place with a total of 614 team points.

Ohio State University took the top spot in the final standings after adding up 979.5 points. Host Cincinnati was second with 727.5 team points and Oakland University was third with a 619 points.

Kenyon’s top finisher Saturday was senior Ian Reardon. He won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:05.06 and earlier in the meet placed third in the 200-yard individual medley by clocking in at 1:53.24. Also in the 200-yard IM, Kenyon junior Matt Leenhouts claimed eighth place in a time of 1:56.25. Those were three of the 11, top-eight individual finishes for the Lords on Saturday.

Matching Reardon’s third-place showing was Austin Pu, another Kenyon senior. He claimed that position after clocking in at 21.17 in the 50-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard freestyle, Robert Williams, Chris Rutter and Connor Rumpit took six, seventh and eighth place, respectively. Their times were 1:43.03, 1:43.07 and 1:43. 32.

Early in the meet, senior Arthur Conover raced to a fourth-place finish by completing the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:33.14.

Sixth-place times were turned in by Mick Bartholomew and Jon Zimdars. Bartholomew, a freshman, claimed that spot in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.52. Zimdars, a sophomore, did so in the 200-yard butterfly by stopping the clock at 1:55.43. Senior Oscar Anderson wasn’t too far behind Bartholomew in the backstroke. He ended up with an eighth-place time of 1:57.83.

The Lords return home Saturday for their final dual meet of the season. They’ll go up against the Wittenberg University Tigers in a meet that will get underway at 1 p.m.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies swimming team completed the two-day University of Cincinnati Invitational in fourth place on Saturday as they went up against three other NCAA Division I schools including The Ohio State University and Oakland University.

Sophomore Hannah Orbach-Mandel turned in the Ladies’ highest mark during the morning as she was the runner-up in the 200 freestyle. Her time of 1:52.33 was also good for NCAA ‘B’ cut standards.

Kenyon’s next-best marks came from Julia Wilson and Marysol Arce. In the 1000 freestyle, Arce came in fourth with a time of 10:20.25 while Wilson took fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.88. Additionally, Julie Dierker registered a ninth-place mark in the 1000 while Ellie Crawford came in eighth in the 200 IM.

Later, Arce had a sixth-place finish in the 200 butterfly.

Abby Wilson and Zoe Toscos delivered Kenyon’s final top individual finishes. Both competing in the 50 free, Wilson came in ninth at 24.52 while Toscos touched in 24.75 one spot later.

In relay competition, Kenyon’s 400 free relay team came in fourth and the team’s 400 medley relay squad took sixth.

Next up for the Ladies is a dual meet against Wittenberg University next Saturday at James A. Steen Aquatics Center starting at 1 p.m.
