MIT Cranks Out Wins Against Johns Hopkins, NYU

MIT freshman Bouke Edskes (Rockville, Md.) registered two event wins as well as a pair of NCAA "B" cut times and the Engineers won six different events as the fourth-ranked Cardinal and Gray took down nationally-ranked opponents No. 5 Johns Hopkins, 154.50-107.50, and No. 7 NYU, 154-144, in a double-dual meet on Friday afternoon inside the Palladium Athletic Facility.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- In just a ten point differential between MIT and NYU, two teams which competed in Cambridge at the MIT Winter Invitational earlier in the season, it was the Engineers' 400-free relay which sealed their win over the Violets. Junior Jeremy Bogle (Weston, Mass.), classmate Dane Erickson (Naples, Fla.), freshman Emilio Sison (Annandale, Va.) and junior Joshua Tomazin (Austin, Texas) edged NYU's "A" team by 1.13-seconds with an overall time of 3:05.48 to secure the sweep of both teams this afternoon.
 
- Edskes notched his NCAA "B" cut times in both butterfly events as he swam a time of 49.43 for first place in the 100-fly and touched the wall first in 1:51.06 in the 200-fly. Edskes also swam to third place in the 200-back in 1:54.46. Edskes was joined by classmate Gabriel Schneider (Santa Monica, Calif.) in the 200-back as he touched the was 1.36-second ahead of Edskes in 1:53.11 for second place.
 
- Both Tomazin and Bogle, who both swam in that 400-free relay together, also swept the top-two spots in the 50-free and the 100-free. Tomazin won the 50-free in 21.05 and was followed by Bogle in 21.19, while Bogle won the 100-free in 46.26 and was followed by Tomazin in 46.91. Erickson joined in in the 50-free as he touched the wall third overall in 21.37 to help the Engineers take the top-three spots in the event.
 
- Edskes and Tomazin began their day's with the 200-medley relay team as sophomore Daniel Smith (Lake Forest, Ill.) and classmate Brandon McKenzie (Brigantine, N.J.) aided the duo to first place in 1:32.72. Individually, Smith tied for second overall in the 100-back (51.58) and took fourth in the 200-back (1:56.08), while McKenzie finished second in the 100-breast (57.69), third in the 200-breast (2:06.91) and third in the 200-IM (1:55.06).
 
- Freshman David Morejon (Humble, Texas), who aided MIT's "B" 400-free relay team to fourth place as the leadoff swimmer in 3:08.60, also took third in the 200-free (1:43.12), fifth in the 500-free (4:46.98) and sixth in the 100-free (47.79). The freshman was joined by Smith, senior John Matthews (Yorktown, Va.) and junior Dougie Kogut (Glen Burnie, Md.) in the relay to close the double-dual meet on a high note.
 
- In the diving well, sophomore Elliot Forde (Everett, Wash.) registered a score of 262.28 for second place on the 3-meter board and 238.59 for third place on the 1-meter board. Classmate Jeremy Sands (Skokie, Ill.) took second on the 1-meter board with a score of 275.70 and third on the 3-meter board (247.05).

The Johns Hopkins men's swim team split against New York University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays won eight events to beat the host Violets (140-122). JHU won five events in the loss to the Engineers (154.5-107.5).

Top Finishers
• Hopkins won the 200 Medley Relay versus NYU and placed second against MIT. Junior Jan Hagemeister, senior Evan Holder and juniors Mark Wilson and Michael Ashmead combined for a time of 1:32.74. The team of junior Peter Conzola, sophomores Peter Lazorchak and Michael Wohl and senior Jeremy Bauchwitz finished in third against the Violets with a time of 1:36.69. 
• Senior Andy Greenhalgh cruised to a win and a pool record in the 1000 Free. He touched in 9:12.90 to beat the field by 17.52 seconds. His time is also the fourth fastest in program history. Sophomore Erik Bostrom placed second against MIT and third against NYU with a time of 9:48.11. Freshman Ali Aly finished in third place against MIT as he touched in 9:57.56. 
• Senior Evan Holder followed with a win in the 200 Free as he clocked in at 1:40.41. His time is an NCAA provisional time and bested the field by more than two and a half seconds. Junior Kyle Otazu placed second in 1:42.98. 
• Conzola tied for the top spot in the 100 Back against MIT and placed second NYU with a time of 51.58. He finished just eight-hundredths of a second behind the Violets' winner. Hagemeister finished in third as he clocked in at 52.33. 
• Against NYU, Lazorchak took second in 58.57 while senior Scott Sterrett placed third in 59.54. 
• Mark Wilson won the 200 Fly against NYU and finished second versus MIT with a time of 1:52.94. 
• Ashmead then placed third in the 50 Free versus the home team. He clocked in 21.57.
• In the 100 Free versus the Violets, sophomore John Chu finished in second (47.74), followed by Ashmead in third (47.94). 
• Junior Andrew Gibson took third in the 200 Back against NYU with a time of 1:57.73. 
• Holder followed with two more wins, taking the top spot in the 200 Breast. He touched first in 2:03.77 to win by 2.40 seconds. His time is also an NCAA provisional time. 
• Hopkins then took the top three spots in the 500 Free. Greenhalgh led the way with an NCAA provisional time of 4:27.70. He won by 9.68 seconds and broke the pool record. Otazu finished in second place with a time of 4:36.38, followed by Bostrom in 4:43.06. 
• In the 100 Fly, Mark Wilson picked up the win against NYU and finished second against MIT with a time of 50.39. 
• Sterrett then took second in the 200 IM versus MIT and third against NYU with a time of 1:56.70. Sophomore Emile Kuyl placed third against the Engineers as he finished in 1:57.15. 
• Hopkins ended the night with a win in the 400 Free Relay against the Violets, and a second-place finish against the Engineers. Holder, Ashmead, Chu and Mark Wilson clocked in at 3:06.61. The team of Wohl, junior Davis Knox, Bauchwitz and senior Patrick Flynn placed third against NYU with a time of 3:11.51.

For the Record
• Greenhalgh set pool records in both the 500 and 1000 Free. He bested the mark in the 500 by just over 11 seconds and the 1000 by more than 23 seconds. 
• Holder also took down a pool record as he broke the mark in the 200 Breast by three-tenths of a second.

The New York University men's swimming & diving team fell to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins University in a tri-meet on Friday, January 13, at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.

The Violets (2-3) fell to the Engineers (7-1) by a score of 154-144 and were defeated by the Blue Jays (7-3) by a 140-122 margin.

"We swam so well today against two of the top teams in the country," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "The result today was insignificant compared to how we raced and competed."

Connor Brisson continued his standout campaign by winning both the one-meter (348.00) and the three-meter (382.43) competitions.

"Connor continued his domination on the boards," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "I feel we are exactly where we should be going into the championship part of the season."

VIOLET VICTORS:

- Chad Moody was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (51.50).

- Reid Hensen took first in the 200-yard IM (1:54.18).

- Tim Kou won the 100-yard breaststroke (57.27).

The Violets return to action tomorrow when the squad visits Springfield College for a dual meet beginning at 1:00 pm.

The New York University women's swimming & diving team defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins University in a tri-meet on Friday, January 13, at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.

The Violets (6-0) defeated the Engineers (6-3) by a score of 185-109 and topped the Blue Jays (4-5) by a 153-103 margin. The Violets have now posted a streak of 24 consecutive dual meet victories.

"We swam so well today against two of the top teams in the country," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "The women kept their win streak alive, and the racing was just great today."

Elise Gibbs celebrated Senior Day by winning all four events in which she competed. She won the 50-yard freestyle (24.25), 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.06), 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.49), and swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.93), which also included May Li, Honore Collins and Kathy Lin.

VIOLET VICTORS:

- Noel Leung took first in the 100-yard freestyle (52.61) and in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.11).

- Lin won the 100-yard butterfly (57.48).

- Li took first in the 100-yard backstroke.

- Haley Wen triumphed in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:35.71).

- On the diving boards, Ashlie Pankonin celebrated her Senior Day by winning the one-meter competition (280.73) and taking second in the three-meter (263.63).

"Ashlie had her best meet of the year on Senior Day. I couldn't be happier for her," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "I feel we are exactly where we should be going into the championship part of the season."
