USMMA Press Release

NEW LONDON Conn. (Jan. 14, 2017) – On Saturday, senior diver Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas) set a new USMMA record in the one-meter dive with a score of 290.85, shattering the old record of 257.55 set in 2015. The mark was also new record for Coast Guard’s Roland Pool, breaking a 16 year old pool record, and also qualifies her for NCAAs.

Despite the great feat by Fentress, the Mariners suffered their first loss of the season, 198-101, at the hands of the Bears.

Fentress also took the top spot in the three-meter dive with a score of 267.45. All five Mariner divers had season-best scores – Fentress, sophomore Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Briana Buderus (Flower Mound, Texas) and freshmen Mercedes Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and Kellie Beadle (Lebanon, Tenn).

Merchant Marine picked up two event wins in races – first in the 1,000 freestyle by freshman Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) in 11:14.62 and then later in the meet in the 200 individual medley by classmate Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) in 2:17.78. Both of those times were season-bests, and Lou’s was by two seconds.

Sophomore Colleen Griffin (Kinnelon, N.J.) had two season-best times herself, trimming off three seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.06) and five seconds in the 200 IM (2:37.96).

A non-conference dual-meet against Hunter College is up next for Merchant Marine this Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Manhattan. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Hawks’ North Campus Pool.
