Carleton Press Release

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Caroline Mather (So./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista), Ada Meyer (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), Amy Roach (Jr./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase), and Maria Wetzel (Sr./Salem, Ore./West Salem) each won multiple events as the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team bested Gustavus Adolphus, 151-137, in a Friday evening dual meet at Thorpe Pool. The Knights won 12 of the 16 events en route to their first dual meet triumph over the Gusties since 2011.

“It was a great win for the women and a great battle for the men,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “We had so many races that were incredible to see, and every team member was involved. Awesome levels of energy tonight from both teams, which is a credit to the senior class who set the tone. It is something we really stressed having coming into the meet.

“We haven't raced since early December, and with the intense training we are doing, there was the potential to come into meet this meet flat. But having energy from your teammates is the fuel for the resilience you need in races at this point in the season, and the teams did an outstanding job giving energy to each other in and out of the pool.”

Roach got the Knights fired up right away. The meet began with the 1-meter diving competition, and she grabbed first place with her score of 201.35 points. She later posted the top score of 215.40 on the three-meter board as well.

The first swimming race was the 200-yard medley relay and the quartet of Wetzel, Meyer, Mather, and Alex Braiedy (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) was first to the wall at 1:50.46. All four of those swimmers would win individual races on the evening.

Wetzel wasted no time in nabbing the first of her three individual triumphs, as she bested the field in the very next event—the 1000-yard freestyle—with a time of 11:05.65. She would later add first-place results in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.62) and 500-yard freestyle (5:22.88).

Braiedy prevailed in the 200-yard freestyle by posting a season-best time of 1:59.75. Meyer was first to finish in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke as she clocked times of 1:08.82 and 2:31.53, respectively, and Mather raced her way to top billing in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races (24.53 and 53.72, respectively).

The meet concluded the same way it began, with a triumph for the Knights. Mather and Braiedy teamed with Anisa Lester (Jr./Corte Madera, Calif./The Branson School) and Chloe Rouhandeh (Sr./New York, N.Y./Dalton School) to post a time of 1:39.25 in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Roach and Emma Lederer (Fy./Madison, Wis./West) shared the team’s “Can of Corn” award as the performers at the meet. Lederer placed third in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (1:03.70 and 2:18.63) and fourth in the 200-yard IM (2:22.00).

The Knights will be right back in the water on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they travel to Decorah, Iowa and participate in the Luther Sprint Invitational.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Alex Mathson (Sr./Verona, Wis./Verona) and Jack Dalluge (Fy./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) both won twice and Colin Lau (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) added another victory, but the Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team absorbed its first dual meet loss to Gustavus Adolphus College since 2014, absorbing a 189-109 setback.

Mathson notched the Knights’ first victory of the meet, prevailing in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:14.18. He later added a first-place finish with a time of 2:02.93 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Dalluge took home the “Can of Corn” award as the squad’s performer of the meet and touched the wall first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.44) and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.75). Lau secured Carleton’s other victory after clocking a time of 54.31 for the 100-yard butterfly.

Sam Darwish (Fy./Akron, Ohio./University School) nearly added another win for the Knights, but he was out-touched in the 200-yard butterfly by the Gusties’ Ryan Sklar. The margin of victory was only 0.01 seconds.

The Knights will be looking for more of that energy on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they travel to Decorah, Iowa and participate in the Luther Sprint Invitational at 12 p.m.
