Minnesota Leads Denver, Wyoming After Day 1

The University of Minnesota men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both lead Denver and Wyoming after Day 1 of dual meet competition in Denver. The Gopher men are leading Wyoming 125.50-41.50 and leading Denver 96.50 to 70.50. The women are leading Wyoming 118-49 and leading Denver 93-74.

WOMEN
Kierra Smith won the 100 breaststroke by .01, touching in 1:02.63. Lindsey Horejsi was third in 1:03.21.

Danielle Nack’s time of 2:00.95 won the 200 fly. Rina Krupsky’s 2:08.45 placed fifth, with Breanne Siwicki (2:09.58) in sixth. 

Chantal Nack won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.90. Abigail Raatz (1:54.45) and Kaia Grobe (1:55.31) were fifth and sixth.

Tevyn Waddell won the 100 backstroke in 54.80. 

Zoe Avestruz took first in the 50 free with a time of 23.36. As in the 200, Raatz (24.39) and Grobe (24.41) were fifth and sixth.

The Gophers won both relays contested on Friday night. Waddell, Horejsi, Danielle Nack and Avestruz opened the meet with a 1:41.12 in the 200 medley relay. Chantal Nack, Danielle Nack, Avestruz and Waddell concluded the session with a 7:27.21 in the 800 free relay.

Lexi Tenenbaum (320.95) and Mariam Khamis (292.55) placed second and third on the 3-meter diving board. Beth Etterman (247.15) was fifth.

Smith (2:07.03) and Danielle Bergeson (2:07.06) finished third and fourth in the 200 IM.

Siwicki placed third in the 1,000 free in 10:25.81. Lauren Lalumiere (10:29.66) and Erin Emery (10:29.93) were fifth and sixth.

MEN
Minnesota swept the top three spots in the 200 IM. Jakub Maly (1:50.90) finished ahead of teammates Jonathon Thielen (1:51.41) and John Bushman (1:51.63).

Paul Fair and Maly had a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:39.51 and 1:40.51, respectively. Nick Saulnier (1:41.44) took fourth.

Daryl Turner won the 100 backstroke in 47.63. Tyler Klatt (50.93) and Noah Busch (51.32) placed fourth and fifth.

Bowe Becker posted his sixth sub-20 time in the 50 free, winning in 19.95. Turner (20.83) tied for fifth place.

Alan LeBlang won 1-meter diving with a score of 316.35. Lucas Cooperman (278.65) was fourth and Jeremy Moser (232.30) seventh.

The Gophers ended Friday’s session with a win in the 800 free relay, as Fair, Tuomas Pokkinen, Saulnier and Redondo edged out Denver in 6:44.95. To start their evening, Turner, McHugh, Fair and Becker (1:28.70) tied for second in the 200 medley relay.

Nick Plachinski (9:32.98), Michael Messner (9:34.55) and Logan Redondo (9:36.66) claimed the second through fourth spots in the 1,000 freestyle. 

Eric Sande (54.99) placed second in the 100 breast, while Conner McHugh (55.75) tied for third and Bushman (56.22) was sixth.

Nick Orf was the Gophers’ top finisher in the 200 fly, in third place (1:50.77).

DENVER – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs grabbed four event wins, lead Wyoming, but trail to Minnesota through the first day of two on Friday night at El Pomar Natatorium. [RV men/16 women] Minnesota, Wyoming and [24/26] Denver will get back in the water tomorrow as diving begins at 9:30 a.m. MT, Denver’s Senior Day ceremony starts at 11:45 a.m., and the final 16 events of the swimming portion of the meet begin at 12 p.m.

The Pioneers opened up their first home meet of 2017 with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. Junior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.), sophomore Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario), junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) and senior Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) combined for a time of 1:42.75. Denver’s B-relay finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:45.31.
 
Denver’s men followed up a women’s swim that was within a second of the pool record with what would have been a pool record of their own had they not been beaten out by Minnesota’s 200 medley relay. Junior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.), senior Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia), redshirt-senior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) and freshman Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.) combined for the second-place time of 1:29.25 (previous pool record 1:29.89). Minnesota’s A-relay finished at 1:28.70.
 
The Crimson and Gold followed the relay swims with a sweep of the 1000 freestyle. Junior Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) earned her third win of the year in the distance race with a time of 10:16.71, while freshman Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) picked up his second win in the event by over four seconds, touching at 9:28.15. Junior Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) touched fourth in her race with a time of 10:25.82.
 
Myers got back in the pool for the fifth event of the evening, leading the Pioneers with a second place time of 1:52.42 in the 200 free. Sophomore Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas) touched fourth at 1:53.38 in the event. Junior Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland) and senior Luke Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished third and fifth on the men’s side with times of 1:41.28 and 1:41.59, respectively.
 
Roas and McCormick earned Denver points in the 100 back with times of 55.18 (second) and 56.62 (third). Juniors Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Jared Smith (Boulder City, Nev.) also picked up second and third place finishes for the Pioneers in the 100 back, touching at 48.22 and 50.50.
 
Senior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) and Andison finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 100 breast with times of 1:02.64 and 1:03.81, while Cottam and senior Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) finished third and fifth in a tightly-contested men’s 100 breast.
 
The Pioneers took three of the top four spots in the 200 fly as Bradley (second/2:06.69), sophomore Avery Niemann (Oklahoma City, Okla. – third/2:07.15) and junior Grace Sommerville (Ashburton, New Zealand – fourth/2:07.92) all finished a little more than a second apart.
 
Denver’s men picked up an event win in the 200 butterfly when redshirt-senior Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) and sophomore Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) led the pack with times of 1:49.65 and 1:50 flat. The 200 fly win for Torress is his second of the season. Junior Ben Ussery (Austin, Texas) made it three of the top four spots for Denver in the event with a time of 1:52.83.
 
To the speedsters, junior Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in a time of 23.43 in the 50 free to finish second and sophomore Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.) touched third in 24.04. Robrock and Farber finished second and fourth on the men’s’ side with times of 20.25 and 20.65.
 
Andison and Sanders touched 1-2 in the 200 IM for the Pioneers at times of 2:03.96 and 2:05.85, respectively, to earn the Pioneers their fourth victory of the day.

Wyoming Press Release

DENVER, Colo. – Wyoming swimming and diving wrapped up the first half a double-dual against Denver and Minnesota on Friday evening at the El Pomar Natatorium in Denver, Colo. The Cowboys trail Minnesota, 125.5-41.5, and Denver by a score of 118-49. The Cowgirls are currently behind against Denver, 124-43, and Minnesota, 118-49.

Senior Gabe Rooker notched Friday’s only victory for the Cowboys, clocking in at 54.59 in the 100 breaststroke. Rooker finished the first 50 yards of the race two-tenths of a second behind the lead, but swam the second leg more than half a second faster than any other competitor to claim the win. It’s Rooker’s second victory in the 100 breaststroke in less than a week after last Saturday’s pool-record race against Mines.

Freshman Daniela Luna Rocha stepped up for the Cowgirls, placing second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:19.32. The Tijuana, Mexico native finished more than six seconds faster than the third-place competitor.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will conclude the double-dual tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m. MT.
