Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships, Night Three

The Queens University of Charlotte women’s swim team snapped two meet records on the third day of competition in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships. Holding their spot at the top of the standings, Queens tallied 1136.5 points by the end of the day. Wingate followed in second place with 1100 points while Carson Newman earned 769 for third.  
 
Alexandra Marshall, Kyrie Dobson, Shane Knight, and Shelly Prayson, respectively, started the day with a new meet record in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The four took the top swim in the event by over a second as they touched the wall with a 1:31.98, NCAA “A” cut.
 
Prayson earned herself a first place finish as she secured a 1:01.65 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her race was fast enough to earn an NCAA “A” mark. Prayson broke the meet record in the morning preliminary races, touching with a 1:01.38.
 
The 100 yard butterfly saw Georgia Dacruz claim first with a 53.72, taking an NCAA “B” standard time for the event. 

With one last first place swim, Hannah Peiffer took hold of the 100 yard backstroke recording a 54.34.
 
Josefina Lorda-Taylor reached the wall in second place in the 400 yard individual medley. Dropping a second off her morning swim, she clocked a time of 4:23.57.
 
Reaching inside the top three, McKenzie Stevens posted the second fastest swim of the night in the 200 yard freestyle. Reaching the wall with an automatic qualifying mark, she narrowly missed the first place finish, claiming a time of 1:48.25.

Records fell on the third day of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships as the Queens University of Charlotte men’s swim team extended their lead in the competition. The Royals ended the day with 1155 points as Wingate moved into second place with 834. Carson Newman rounded out the top three with 732 points.
 
Starting the day with the new meet record, Marius Kusch, Paul Pijulet, Dmytro Sydorchenko, and Mitchell Harwood claimed the 200 yard freestyle relay. The four touched the wall with a 1:19.38 for the top spot and over a second gap from the competition.
 
Nicholas Arakelian followed with the fastest time in the 400 yard individual medley. His automatic qualify swim of 3:47.73 claimed the event by 10 seconds.
 
Kusch led the way in the 100 yard butterfly, reaching the wall with an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA championships.
 
Adding another first place finish to the Royals record, Dion Dreesens clocked a 1:35.38 in the 200 yard freestyle. He shattered the previous meet record by two seconds.
 
Paul Pijulet dropped on last meet record as he took hold of the 100 yard backstroke. His first place swim clocked a time of 47.27.

Rostyslav Fedyna and Devyn Hughes held back-to-back finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke. Fedyna’s 54.12 swim earned him the second place finish while Hughes recorded a 54.24 for the event.

Wingate University junior Alex Divelbiss (Pueblo, Colo.) won her second gold medal on night three of the 19th annual Bluegrass Mountain Conference championship meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center (MCAC) in downtown Charlotte (championship central). Divelbiss touched first in the 400 Individual Medley with her triumphant time of 4:22.09 (Friday results; Friday PM time trials).

On the women's team leader board, Queens University of Charlotte is first with 1136.5 points. Wingate is next with 1100 points, while Carson-Newman University is third with 769 markers. The Queens men have 1155 points to top the team charts. Wingate collected 389 points Friday to move into second place with 834 points. Carson-Newman is third with 732 points.

Wingate women's recap

On Thursday, Divelbiss won the 200 Individual Medley with her time of 2:01.34. She started her Friday evening by swimming the anchor leg on Wingate's third-place 200 Freestyle Relay quartet (1:33.41). She was joined by senior Caitlin Coughlin (Cochranville, Pa.) and sophomores Maria Madsen (Dragoer, Denmark) and Hanna Van Horen (Hofstade, Belgium).

Madsen earned a bronze medal in the 200 Freestyle with her time of 1:50.91. Four Bulldogs made the 200 Freestyle finals, as freshman Abby Kosic (West Chester, Pa.) was fifth, Van Horen was sixth and freshman Ashlynn Weissgerber (Trussville, Ala.) was eighth. Newcomer Leticia Odorici (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) won the 200 Freestyle "B" final with her time of 1:52.52.

Earlier in the evening, four Wingate student-athletes made the 100 Butterfly finals. WU freshman Ebba Stillman (Huskvarna, Sweden) and Coughlin claimed second place (54.77) and third place (55.32), respectively. Senior Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) was fifth, while freshman Katharina Vos (Zschopay, Germany) was seventh in the 100 Butterfly.

Arkhipova was one of four Bulldogs who competed in the 100 Backstroke finals. The 2016 Academic All-America recipient earned a silver medal with her time of 54.53. Wingate junior Miranda Seegars (Monroe, N.C.) was third in the 100 Backstroke with her time of 56.41. Freshman Jordan Clark (Katy, Texas) and junior Mariona Espinalt (Barcelona, Spain) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the same event.

In the 100 Breaststroke, WU graduate student and team captain Olga Kosheleva (Yekaterinburg, Russia) took second place with her silver-medal time of 1:02.18. Senior Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) was fifth, while Vos earned her second seventh-place finish of the evening.

Wingate men's recap

Wingate redshirt sophomore Lennart Queiss (Langen, Germany) had a big night, as he took second place in the 200 Freestyle with his time of 1:37.01. He was the top qualifier following the morning preliminaries, thanks to his AM time of 1:37.82. Queiss started his Friday evening by swimming the third leg on Wingate's fourth-place 200 Freestyle Relay quartet (1:21.36). He was joined by senior team captain Mehdi Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium), junior Sebastian Holmberg (Njutanger, Sweden) and senior team captain Lucas Cuadros (Cali, Colombia).

In the evening's first individual event, senior Øystein Fjeldberg (Oslo, Norway) took fourth place in the 400 Individual Medley with his time of 3:58.05. Holmberg followed with his third place standing in the 100 Butterfly (48.50). Sophomore Niklas Martin (Kempton, Germany) was seventh in the 100 Butterfly.

In the 100 Breaststroke, freshmen Leo Zabudkin (Frankfurt, Germany) and Giacomo Viazzo (Lonato del Gardo, Italy) were sixth (55.54) and eighth (56.08), respectively. Bulldog sophomore Nathan Kimbel (Yorktown, Va.) won the 100 Breaststroke "B" final with his time of 56.06. Earlier in the evening, Wingate junior Tripp Wright (Cypress, Texas) won the "B" final in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:42.09.

Catawba Press Release

No school records fell for Catawba on day three of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships, but the Catawba Indian men posted several finals swims on Friday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Both teams moved up to sixth in the overall standings with the men garnering 349 points and the women 249.

Joao Barreto had the best finish for the Indians as he went fourth in the 100 fly. His time of 48.51 was a NCAA 'B' cut time. Ali Hegazi swam to fifth in the 200 free (1:40.53) with a B cut and Federico Higareda touched seventh in the 100 breast (55.72) which was the fifth best time in school history.

Dominic Brus won the B final of the 100 back (50.62) with Arnold Blohme placing 15th in the event in a time of 53.14. Blohme was 18th in the 100 fly (51.32). Michael King came home 13th in the 400 IM (4:09.52) and Dylan Ruppart was 16th in the 200 free (1:48.86).

Cassie Shear had the best finish for the women with her 12th in the 100 breast (1:07.05). Marcia-Mariel Erhart placed 13th in the 400 IM (4:45.11) and Amy Cujas touched 15th in the 100 back (1:01.08). The other B final swim was by Susanne Reeg, who was 16th in the 100 fly (1:01.21).

Jess Daniel came in 21st in the 400 IM (4:50.92) and Emily Najar swam to 22nd in the 200 free (2:01.17). Reeg capped the individual swims with a 24th in the 100 back (1:03.26).

The women's 400 free relay team of Cujas, Shear, Reeg and Najar finished seventh in a time of 1:41.46. The men's team of Barreto, Higareda, Brus and Hegazi was sixth in their time of 1:23.40.
