Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational Features Fast Final Night

Juniors Anna Quinn and Alex Peña each posted individual victories and the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay also earned a first-place finish on the final day of the Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational in Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
 
“There were a lot of folks that did a lot of great racing this weekend,” said head coach Dan Colella. “You’re always excited to see the fruits of your labor … It had to be exciting for those heading to Atlanta to see the kinds of drops that these guys made this week. It’s got everybody looking forward to ACCs.”
 
Following morning preliminaries, sophomore Brittany Kahn checked in at a career-best 17:17.54 for fourth overall in the women’s 1,650 freestyle. Sophomore Riley Hickman competed in the men’s mile Sunday evening, notching the fifth-fastest time in the field at 15:35.61.
 
Junior Maria Sheridan turned in an exciting race in the women’s 200 backstroke championship final, finishing second in 2:02.40. Peña was equally as impressive in the same event on the men’s side, besting the field for an individual victory (1:44.38). That swim lowered his career-best time in the event, moving him up to second on the program’s all-time performance list.
 
In the 100 freestyle events, freshman Kira Page was fourth (51.22) and classmate Sheldon Boboff eighth (45.23) overall. Another Blue Devil rookie, Suzanne Dolan, registered a career-best time of 51.84 in winning the women’s B final.
 
Duke placed two swimmers in the women’s 200 breaststroke A final, led by sophomore Alyssa Arwood in fourth (2:18.07). Susan Hynes was sixth (2:21.96), while junior Catie Miller earned a personal best of 2:17.16 in winning the B final. Freshman Noah Stevens etched his name on the Blue Devils’ all-time performance list in the men’s 200 breaststroke, dropping time from preliminaries to take second overall at 2:00.40.
 
The women’s 200 butterfly saw junior Anna Quinn claim a win in 1:59.19, good for an NCAA provisional cut. Freshman Daichi Matsuda represented Duke in the men’s 200 butterfly, placing fourth at 1:47.95. Matsuda’s morning swim of 1:47.91 ranked him fifth all-time in program history.
 
In the final event of the meet, senior Jessie Sutherland helped bring home a first-place finish for the women’s 400 freestyle relay, joining teammates Miller, Sheridan and Page in combining for a mark of 3:26.53. The men’s 400 freestyle relay of senior Rahul Chokshi, Peña, Stevens and Hickman took third in 3:02.74 to close things out.
 
The Blue Devil women’s swimmers and women’s and men’s divers compete next at the 2017 ACC Championships Feb. 13-16 in Atlanta, Ga.

Freshman Erica Wirth won the championship in the 1650-yard freestyle, senior Katie McKay took second place in the 100-yard freestyle and junior Madison Boswell was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly as the University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams concluded action Sunday night in the 2017 Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational at Duke University's Taishoff Aquatics Center.

Wirth, a freshman from New Providence, N.J., captured the title in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:49.01, just ahead of Manuella Ribas Andrade of Florida State, who finished second in 16:50.30.

n the women's 200-yard butterfly, junior Madison Boswell took a second place finish in a time of 1:59.38.  That was less than a second off her career best time of 1:58.59.  During the course of the weekend, Boswell won the titles in the event's 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard individual medley while finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Two Tar Heel men placed in the "A" final of the 200-yard backstroke.  Senior Patrick Riess finished fifth in a time of 1:47.84 while sophomore Heyward Harrison was seventh in 1:50.03.  Riess swam a career best time of 1:47.21 in the preliminary of the event on Sunday morning, eclipsing his previous personal best clocking of 1:48.13.

UNC senior Katie McKay was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.41.  She achieved a personal best time in the process.  Her previous best time was 50.81, which she barely missed in the preliminaries at 50.84.  Freshman Kylie Mihok finished fifth in the event with a time of 51.26.

Other Tar Heels in "A" finals on Sunday were freshman Meghan Dupay in the women's 200-yard breaststroke where she finished fifth in 2:19.85 and sophomore Tom Bilden in the men's 200-yard butterfly where he placed fifth in 1:49.53.

NC State Press Release

The NC State swimming program concluded day three of the Carolina College Nike Invitational on Sunday with three first-place finishes, two pool records and five NCAA 'B' cuts. 

Backstroke 
Parker Campbell started the night off for NC State, finishing in second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.73. In the morning, Campbell posted a 1:43.82, earning an NCAA 'B' cut.
 
Freestyle
In the women's 100 freestyle, Krista Duffield led the Wolfpack with a first place finish in 49.32 to meet the NCAA 'B' standard. Christine Kerr touched the wall in third place, recording a time of 50.60. Vasiliki Baka, Emmie Barnhill and Caroline Estep finished in sixth, seventh and eighth place, posting times of 51.27, 51.62 and 51.96, respectively.
 
Soeren Dahl won the men's 100 free, touching the wall in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 43.69. Tyler Rice (44.31) and Scott Johnson (44.33) followed, finishing in second and third place. Joe Bonk rounded out the Wolfpack showing in the 'A' final with a sixth place finish in 44.43.
 
A trio of Wolfpackers earned top-8 finishes in the men's 1650. Alex Hamilton led the group with a fourth place finish, touching the wall in 15:32.57. Mason Revis' time of 15:36.12 earned him a sixth place finish while Trey Poff went 15:41.09 to take eighth place.
 
Breaststroke
In the women's 200 breaststroke, Rozhina McClanahan finished in 2:17.05 to take second place. Olga Lapteva followed, taking third place in 2:17.41. In the preliminary session, Maddie Witzke posted a time of 2:24.22.
 
In the men's race, Quinlan Stuart finished fourth with a time of 2:01.37.
 
Butterfly
Andreas Vazaios earned the Wolfpack its third first-place finish, taking the 200 butterfly in 1:43.46 to break the pool record. His time marked the second-fastest 200 fly in program history. Lucca Martins finished in third place with a time of 1:47.43 while Revis finished sixth in 1:50.09. Both Vazaios' and Martins' performances met the NCAA 'B' standard.
 
Wolfpack Relays
NC State concluded the weekend with a pair of second place finishes in the 400 free relay. In the women's race, the team of Lapteva, Barnhill, Estep and Maddie Witzke finished with a time of 3:26.83 while Vazaios, Quinlan Stuart, Revis and Hamilton touched the wall in 3:01.60 in the men's relay. Vazaios' leadoff split of 43.51 broke the pool record in the 100 free.

The Florida State swimming and diving teams closed out Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational on Sunday night at the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
 
The evening was highlighted by redshirt sophomore McKenna Harris, who won the 200 breast with a new career best time of 2:16.36.
 
“It was another great day of racing,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “There were some exciting swims that will help up moving forward this season.”
 
Freshman Manuella Ribas Andrade was the runner up in the 1650 free in a close race, touching with a final time of 16:50.30 – a new personal best. Redshirt sophomore Daniella Van den Berg followed in third (17:00.34) and her classmate Kendall McIntosh was seventh (17:31.39).
 
Natalie Chambers paced the Seminoles in the 200 back, placing third with a final time of 2:02.81 after swimming a mark of 2:01.91 in prelims. Sophomore Fabiana Ingram cruised to a win in the B final, touching at 2:04.35 while senior Caroline Page followed in 10th at 2:07.62.
 
Sophomore Caroline Nava competed in the B heat of the 100 free, placing 15th at 53.09 and Christi DiPaolo finished in 20th at 53.19.
 
For the men, freshman Vladimir Stefanik led the Seminoles with a fifth place showing in the 100 free, touching with a time of 44.41. His classmate, Rudo Lock added a 12th place finish to his weekend, swimming mark of 45.57. Sophomore John Vann was 15th (46.51) and freshman Nate Samson was 22nd (46.95).
 
In addition, newcomer Keagan Finley added a 15th place finish in the mile, touching at 16:27.78 and Connor Thorne was 18th (17:01.28).
