USMMA Splits With Rowan

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2017) – The USMMA men’s swimming & diving team finished the 2016-17 dual meet season off in thrilling fashion with a narrow home victory over the #10 team in the country, Rowan University, 152-148, at the O’Hara Hall Pool. The Mariners finish the regular season with a 7-3 record, while Rowan falls to 7-2.
 
Prior to the meet, the Mariners paid tribute to their five graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.), John Terselic (Tijera, N.M.), Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas), Joshua Jepsen (San Diego, Calif.) and Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.).
 
In the pool, the Mariners got three wins each by Sasse and freshman Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.). They were both members of the 400 medley relay that led off the day with a victory in 3:29.13 and the 200 free relay team that ended the meet (and won it for the Mariners) with a time of 1:26.04.
 
Individually, Sasse won the 100 breaststroke in 59.36 and Monahan won the 100 freestyle in 48.48.
 
Freshman Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) claimed first in two individual event – the 200 free (1:46.13) and the 500 free (4:48.82). Classmate Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and sophomore Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) also had two wins on the day as they were both on the 400MR team with Sasse and Monahan, then Weaver won the 100 butterfly in 52.51 and Kahl touched first in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.61 – a key win for Merchant Marine down the stretch.
 
Also claiming wins for the Mariners were junior diver Adam Fisher (Edgerton, Wis.) in the one-meter dive (199.35), and freshman Justin Fu (Libertyville, Ill.) and sophomore Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.), who were on the 200 free relay that clinched the win along with Sasse and Weaver.
 
Up next, the Mariners will spend the next two weeks preparing for the very-competitive Metropolitan Championship Meet, hosted by Rutgers University Friday, Feb. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 19.

(Feb. 5, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s swimming & diving team lost its dual meet finale on Saturday afternoon to visiting Rowan University, 193-105, at the O’Hara Hall Pool. In defeat, the Mariners close out the regular season with a 9-2 record, while the Profs improve to 6-3.
 
Prior to the meet, the Mariners paid tribute to their three graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.), Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) and Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas).
 
The Mariners earned four victories on the day, two of which came in the diving competitions by Fentress. She won both the three-meter dive (210.90) and the one-meter dive (232.73).
 
Also claiming wins at the meet were junior Hallie Breidenthal (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.). Breidenthal won the 100 freestyle in 55.05 and the Lou touched first in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.54.
