The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team saw multiple school records broken on the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Saturday.
Freshman Reka Gyorgy broke the program record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.94. The record was held by senior Fiona Donnelly who swam a 1:58.36 at the 2015 ACC Championships. Donnelly, along with Klaudia Nazieblo, Kelly Henry and junior Adriana Grabski, set a pool record with a 1:38.45 in the 200 medley relay. Nazieblo led off the A relay and broke her own record in the 50 back in the process with a time of 24.51.
“It was a great first day for our team today,” head coach Ned Skinner said. “Reka's school record in the 200 IM was impressive and the ladies’ 200 medley relay pool record really lifted us up. Nearly every swimmer posted a lifetime best that prepared for this meet. The energy was outstanding and we are really excited about tomorrow.”
Also turning in career afternoons for the H2Okies were Caroline Busacglia, Baillie Cameron, Simon Shi, Caroline DeJager, Margarita Ryan, Erin Scott, Cooper Pitts, Nick Olson and Colin Murphy.
Swims of the Day
· Buscaglia won the 50 free with a time of 23.36, a season best, and also set a PR in the prelims of the 100 fly with a time of 55.61.
· Sophomore Danielle Griggs crushed her previous personal best of 1:55.68 in the 200 free by swimming a 1:49.55 in the prelims.
· Cameron swam the fastest time of her young career in the 200 breast in the prelims with a 2:14.90 and later placed first in the finals with a 2:16.76.
· Sophomores Nick Olson and Christopher Outlaw tied for first in the A final of the 50 free with a time of 20.36, a career best for both swimmers.
Other Notable Swims
· Shi set personal bests in both the 200 breast with a time of 2:00.30 and the 200 IM with a 1:50.79.
· DeJager registered the fastest times of her career in the 200 IM with a 2:16.18 and the 200 breast with a 2:17.50.
· Like DeJager, Scott also set a new personal best in the 200 breast after swimming a 2:19.18 in the finals.
· Murphy entered the day with a seed time of 4:33.65 in the 500 free and went on to swim a 4:28.30 to finish second in the finals, a new PR.
