MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 30, 2016) – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team opens the 2016-17 season with the fourth annual Gold-Blue Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, October 1. Competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET, at the WVU Natatorium.

“We've spent the last four weeks working on conditioning, team building and education, which has been great,” said head coach Vic Riggs. “Now we are getting close to the start of our competition season and the Gold-Blue Meet is a great way to finish up our first month of practice. It will also give the staff a chance to see our freshmen compete for the first time.

“Having the Gold-Blue Meet combined with our Ninth Annual Mountaineer Swimming and Diving Celebration makes the weekend a great time to see parents, friends and alumni of the program.”

Last season at the Big 12 Championship, Riggs was named the Men’s Coach of the Meet after leading the men’s team to a second-place finish, their best finish at the conference meet since joining the league. The women placed fourth at the championship. The highlight of the conference meet came when Andrew Marsh won the Big 12 title in the men’s 100 backstroke while breaking the Big 12 Championship record.

Throughout the 2015-16 season, two team records were broken, four pool records were set and the WVU record on men’s platform was broken.

This year, six seniors return for their final season as Mountaineers. Seventeen newcomers join the squad, five on the women’s team and 12 on the men’s.

WVU will officially open the season when the team travels to Huntington, to compete at the WV State Games from October 7-8.
