Alabama Women Down Vandy, West Florida at Home

The Alabama women's squad picked up a pair of victories, including one against Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt and also against West Florida

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women’s swimming and diving team upended Vanderbilt and West Florida in a double-dual meet Friday afternoon in the Alabama Aquatic Center. The Crimson Tide women secured a 200.5-85.5 win over Vanderbilt while downing West Florida by a score of 201-93. Vanderbilt tallied a 193-101 win against West Florida.
 
“I thought we had a good meet out there today,” UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. “We came out with a lot of enthusiasm and our men’s team gave our ladies great support. Overall, we put up some times that were a little ahead of where I thought we’d be at this point in the season. Now we just have to keep working hard and building as we get deeper into the regular season.”
 
For the second meet in a row, the Crimson Tide swept all relay and individual swimming events while also picking up first place honors in one of the diving events. Friday’s meet was also the start of Alabama Athletics’ 2016-17 Power of Pink schedule of events, designed to help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
 
Seniors Caroline Korst and Bridget Blood combined with juniors Hannah Musser and Bailey Scott to open the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, clocking a 1:42.70. Juniors Temarie Tomley, Musser and Scott along with sophomore Morgan Fleming closed out the meet by posting a 1:32.77 to win the 200 freestyle relay.
 
Freshman Alexis Preski brought home the first individual victory of the day in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:08.05, securing her first win for the Crimson Tide. Scott picked up top honors in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall at 23.11, and Tomley secured first place in the 100 freestyle with a 50.72.
 
The Tide women swept first through fourth place in the 200 freestyle with junior Mia Nonnenberg (1:50.81) winning the event. Nonnenberg also won the 500 freestyle with a 4:53.20 and touched first in the 200 individual medley with a 2:02.99.
 
Blood took top honors in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a 1:02.77 while sophomore Justine Macfarlane went 2:16.14 to win the 200 breaststroke.
 
For the second meet in a row, Musser won both the 100 and 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 55.06 and a 2:01.64, respectively.
 
Freshman Lexi Souther posted a 57.10 to lead the way in the 100 backstroke while fellow rookie Kacey Oberlander (2:03.16) earned the win in the 200 backstroke. The Tide’s domination continued with sophomore Ayanna Woods winning the 1-meter springboard with a score of 299.10.
