Westminster Beats Penn State Behrend

Westminster delivered head coach Pat Smith the first wins at the top of the program with triumphs against Penn State Behrend.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams swept their first dual meet of the season over Penn State Behrend at home Saturday afternoon. The wins were also the first for Westminster’s first-year Head Coach Pat Smith.
 
The Titan men’s team won 171-108, while the Titan women’s team won 193-89. The Westminster men’s team won 10 events, while the women’s team won 12 (not including an event in which they used exhibition swimmers).
 
For the men’s team, junior Mitch Stahara (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) won three individual events and was part of a winning relay team. Stahara won the 200 freestyle (1:49.12), the 200 butterfly (2:06.68), and the 100 freestyle (48.27). Stahara was also the first leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:28.18). Junior Daniel Bogen (Canfield, OH / Canfield), junior Scott Morosetti (Pittsburgh, PA / South Park), and sophomore Michael Spencer (Clearfield, PA / Clearfield) completed the quartet.
 
The men’s 200 medley relay team won with a time of 1:39.91; the foursome consisted of sophomore David Peffer (Ellwood City, PA / Riverside), senior Sam Angelo (Warren, OH / Warren G. Harding), junior Brad Kolesar (West Mifflin, PA / West Mifflin), and Spence. Peffer (100 backstroke/54.76), Angelo  (100 breaststroke/1:03.14), Spencer (50 freestyle/21.95), and Kolesar (100 butterfly/55.31) all earned individual wins. Freshman Aaron Dunlany (Boardman, OH / Boardman) also won the 1,000 freestyle (10:31.59).    
 
For the women’s team, senior Anne Tillie (Fallston, MD / Fallston) and first-year Abby Jones (Cabot, PA / Knoch) each won a pair of individual events and were part of a winning relay team. Tillie won the 500 freestyle (5:25.06) and the 200 IM (2:20.70), while Jones won the 200 breaststroke (2:33.83) and the 200 freestyle (2:03.20). Tillie and Jones were also part of the 200 medley relay team that won at 1:56.24. Junior Cassidy Kovacicek (Washington, PA / Trinity) and first-year Nicole Stengel (Pittsburgh, PA / Carlynton) completed the quartet. Kovacicek also won the 200 backstroke (2:23.46).  
 
Senior Sarah Pace (Cranberry Township, PA / Oakland Catholic) (1,000 freestyle/11:46.28), senior Mikayla Morrow (Columbiana, OH / Homeschool) (100 breaststroke/1:12.07), sophomore Savannah Sutherland (Tallahassee, FL / Chiles) (200 butterfly/2:27.05), and junior Megan Douds (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) (100 butterfly/1:03.55) each earned individual wins. 
 
First-year Kaitlyn Fast (Wooster, OH / Wooster) swept both diving competitions (1-meter/165.65 and 3-meter/178.70).  
 
Westminster will next travel to Allegheny College for a dual meet on Saturday, November 5 with a 1 p.m. start time.
