George Washington Bests Howard

George Washington moved to 4-1 on the season with a trouncing of Howard on Saturday.

WASHINGTON - Sophomore Miranda Simon posted an NCAA Zone qualifying score on the 3-meter boards on Saturday as the GW women's swimming and diving team claimed victory over Howard at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.

The Buff and Blue triumphed in each event on Saturday, downing Howard 149-77 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Simon's career-best 291.4 performance surpassed the NCAA Zone qualifying threshold of 280 for the 3-meter event. Simon is GW's first diver to post a Zone qualifying score since diving was reinstated at GW in the 2014-15 season. Simon is now eligible to compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships; NCAA Zones will take place during the first two weeks of March at various host sites.

Simon took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, posting another career best of 252.00 on the 1-meter boards.

"Miranda Simon set new personal records on both the 1m and 3m and qualified for NCAA Zones, the first diver to accomplish this since diving has been brought back to GW," said head diving coach Anthony Crowder. "Her hard work is really paying off and we look forward to seeing her continued success throughout the season."

Junior Iman Lee and freshman Gillian Chowske also excelled on the boards on Saturday, each notching career-best performances on both boards. Chowske took a pair of second-place finishes with scores of 217.35 and 222.60 on the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively. Lee's 1-meter (208.75) and 3-meter (212.85) performances landed third.

"Our divers had some major accomplishments today with both Iman Lee and Gillian Chowskebreaking 200 for the first time ever and also setting new personal records on both boards," said Crowder. "All of the divers have been committed to the process and working hard at every practice and it is starting to show with their big successes and continuous improvement this season. This was a major accomplishment for each diver and we are looking forward to showing up strong at our next meet at the Magnus Cup."

The Colonials began the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of freshmenAlli Lapps and Elisabeth Vogel, junior Abigail Fusco and senior Lauren Law posted a time of 1:51.54.

Fusco went on to post a stellar day individually, winning the 50 freestyle in 24.35, just ahead of sophomore Isobel Walker in third (25.32). Fusco then touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (58.00) ahead of Lapps in second (1:01.98).

Rookie Jackie Torrez continued the strong start to her career with a pair of individual victories of her own. Torrez led a GW freshman sweep of the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.42, ahead of Vogel in second (2:17.78) and Courtney Coghill in third (2:17.85). Torrez later won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.74, as Coghill placed third in 1:11.33.

Sophomore Emily Zhang also posted a strong day, winning the 200 free in 1:53.87 ahead of freshman Gemma Atherley in second (1:54.74). Zhang also triumphed in the 100 backstroke (59.67) as Lapps took second in 1:00.93. Zhang teamed up with freshman Anaka Will-Dryden, senior Hannah Kopydlowski and Walker to take first in the 200 free relay (1:41.36), then later joined forces with freshman Emily Hample, Kopydlowski and senior Selin Ozturk to win the 400 free relay.

Kopydlowski and Ozturk rounded out GW's winning performances on the day. Kopydlowski began a sweep in the 100 free with her winning time of 55.40 ahead of Hample (56.16) in second and Will-Dryden (57.06) in third. Ozturk touched the wall first in the 1,000 free (10:36.40) as Athlerley finished close behind in second (10:37.39).

The Colonials will take a three-week hiatus from competition before traveling to Cleveland State for the three-day Magnus Cup Invitational from Nov. 18-20.

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's swimming and diving squad won all but one event on Saturday to grab the team's first victory of the season over Howard at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.

Twelve different Colonials played a role in GW's 10 race victories to help GW down Howard, 119-70.

The Buff and Blue began the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as seniorRyan O'Malley, freshmen Karan Mahadev and Emils Pone, and sophomore Alexander Austertouched the wall in 1:38.71.

Pone later teamed up with classmates Alex Cronin and Kyle Hrabovsky and sophomore Josh Monacelli to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.27. Pone added an individual triumph in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.65 to finish just ahead of Monacelli in second (52.97).

Rookie Shawn Lemarie tallied two individual wins, first leading a GW sweep in the 200 free in 1:44.73. Senior Liam Huffman placed second (1:46.98) and junior Connor Hart took third (1:49.19). Lemarie later led another sweep, this time in the 1,000 free, posting a time of 9:53.42, again ahead of Huffman in second (10:02.23) and Hart in third (10.26.10).

Cronin went on to claim a race victory of his own in yet another GW sweep, touching the wall first in the 200 IM (1:59.63) as Monacelli took second (2:00.27) and senior Bogdan Balteanu grabbed third (2:00.40). Cronin later joined forces with Balteanu and juniors Aneil Srivastava and Jarvus Pennington to win the 200 free relay (1:27.96). 

Pennington was the first to finish in the 50 free (22.42) ahead of junior Adam Drury in second (22.48) and senior Ben Fitch in third (22.65).

Drury added his own victory in the 100 free (49.47) ahead of Pennington in second (49.66) and Srivastava in third (49.71).

Freshman Max Forstenhaeusler rounded out GW's winning performances in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 59.73. Mahadev took second in the event (1:01.43) and Auster placed third (1:01.87).

Sophomore Nicolas Reeves placed second in the 100 backstroke to wrap GW's top-three individual performances.
