Franklin & Marshall Victorious Against Washington

Franklin & Marshall earned a pair of wins against Washington College on Saturday.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Seven first-place finishes, including two each from Timothy Gould, Eric Lang, and Eric Dietrich-Peterson, led Franklin & Marshall men's swimming to a dominant 144-99 victory over Washington College in the first meet of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats are now 1-0, 1-0 CC while the Shoremen start the season 0-1, 0-1 CC.

Gould started his 2016-17 campaign with a sweep of the backstroke events. He touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.59, while his mark of 1:59.76 was also good for first in the 200-yard backstroke.

Dietrich-Petersen followed suit, recording a pair of first-place finishes in his first collegiate competition. In the 200-yard freestyle, his time of 1:46.87 was the fastest time of the day by almost three seconds. In the 100-yard butterfly, he clocked a time of 53.02 to tally his second win of the day, and was backed up by Cody Kalinowski (55.19) in second and Jonathon Sinton (56.38) in third as the Diplomats swept the event.

Lang picked up where he left off after a strong 2015-16 season, taking first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:01.83, followed closely by Ryan Caffrey in second at 1:02.48. Lang's day continued in the 200-yard IM, taking first again with a time of 2:03.04, before rounding out his day with a second-place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.52).

Daniel Sanders added the last win of the day for the Diplomats, sprinting to first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 22.21. Sanders added a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle after posting a time of 50.05.

Several other Diplomats tallied second-place finishes on the day, including two apiece from Sinton and Richard Perry. In the 200-yard freestyle, Perry took second at 1:49.80, while his time of 4:59.40 was also good for second in the 500-yard freestyle. Sinton added silver in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:25.15) and 200-yard butterfly (2:04.89) in addition to his third in the 100 fly.

F&M continues early-season action in the Centennial Conference next Saturday, taking on Swarthmore at 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Bryn Mawr.

LANCASTER, Pa. – A pair of first-place finishes from Katherine Hirsch and Anna Hess powered Franklin & Marshall women's swimming to a tight 134-128 victory over Washington College on Saturday in the opening day of the 2016-17 women's swimming season. With the win, the Diplomats open the season 1-0, 1-0 CC while the Shorewomen fall to 0-1, 0-1 CC.

Hirsch wasted no time notching her first collegiate victory, racing to a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.73. She went on to repeat the feat in the 100-yard freestyle, cruising to another top finish after clocking a time of 56.15.

Anna Hess opened her sophomore season on the right foot by matching Hirsch's production, beginning with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.18). Later, she finished off her sweep of the backstroke events by winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2:13.72. before finishing off her night with a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:17.02).

The victor in the 200-yard IM was fellow Diplomat Melissa Mullin, the defending conference champion in the event, who staked her claim as one of the CC's best by winning in 2:16.57. She also added a pair of second-place finishes, starting in the 100-yard breaststroke where her time of 1:09.82 was just .01 shy of tying for first. She took silver again in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:31.68.

Grace Pereles finished second in two events as well, recording a time of 11:05.66 to earn silver in the 1000-yard freestyle. She added another second place in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:02.16.

Diane Wagner added her own second in the 200-yard butterfly, kicking off the 2016-17 campaign with a time of 2:22.49. Freshman Caroline Fry took silver in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.55), while classmate Erin Fago also took second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.77).

The Diplomats continue CC action next Saturday, traveling to Bryn Mawr for competition with Swarthmore and the host Owls at 1:00 p.m.

LANCASTER, Pa. — The host Franklin & Marshall men's swim team won nine of 14 events en route to a 157-105 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Shoremen Highlights
- Pat Elliott had a pair of first-place finishes in the loss, taking the 1000 freestyle in 10:22.06 and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.22. He was also second in the 200 backstroke in 1:59.82.
- Brent Hochstein won the 200 butterfly in 2:03.45, Kevin Mackenzie paced the 100 freestyle in 49.54, and Teague Sauter won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.88.
- Brendan Jones placed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.52. He also became the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the 1000 freestyle with his third-place time of 10:27.24.
- Aidan Sullivan added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 55.79, while Cody Weiler was second in the 50 freestyle in 22.34. 

Notes
- The loss snapped a string of 17 consecutive dual meet wins for the Shoremen, Their most recent loss had been a 135-126 defeat at Gettysburg on November 8th, 2014.

LANCASTER, Pa. — Despite winning nine of the meet's 14 events, the Washington College women's swim team dropped a close 134-128 decision to host and Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall this afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Shorewomen Highlights
- Jenni Clune, Julia Portmann, and Lindsay Wiecki each won two individual events for the Shorewomen. Clune captured the 100 breaststroke (1:09.21) and 200 breaststroke (2:31.67), Portmann the 1000 freestyle (11:05.58) and 500 freestyle (5:25.13), and Wiecki the 200 butterfly (2:20.16) and 100 butterfly (1:01.60). Wiecki was making her collegiate debut. Portmann also placed second in the 100 freestyle in 56.67.
- Clune and Wiecki also swam the breaststroke and butterfly legs, respectively, of the winning 400 medley relay, which finished in a time of 4:04.54. They were joined by Ellen Maxwell (backstroke) and Katie Gorman (freestyle).
- Portmann and Clune swam the lead-off and anchor legs, respectively, of the 200 freestyle relay, which won in a time of 1:41.96. Gorman and Mackenzie Gaze swam the second and third legs, respectively.
- Gorman added a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 25.22. She was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.09.
- Maxwell placed second in both the 100 backstroke (1:02.66) and 200 backstroke (2:18.26).
