Eastern Illinois Sweeps Valpo

Eastern Illinois swept a pair of dual meets against Valparaiso on Saturday.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – After opening the 2016-17 season on the road at IUPUI last weekend, the Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s swimming teams returned to Padovan Pool for the Panthers’ home opener against Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon. Both squads earned victories over Valparaiso, as the men won 163-99 while the women won 168.5-86.5. The Eastern Illinois swimming teams will return to action on Nov. 11 at Padovan Pool as the Panthers host Evansville.

The Panthers recorded a combined 21 first place finishes in the meet against Valparaiso. Matt Jacobs (100-Breast) and Lauren Oostman (200-Back) both set pool records in their respective events. Jacobs finished the 100-Breast with a time of 57.54 while Oostman recorded a time of 2:06.36 in the 200-Back.

The Panthers started the meet strong as both units recorded first place finishes in the 200-Medley Relay. Rachel Mandersheid, Danielle DiMatteo, Martee Grainger, and Oostman touched the wall at 1:52.87. Brogan O’Doherty, Patrick Wood, Jennings Soccorso-McCoy, and Jacobs followed suit as they posted a time of 1:35.75 in the event.

DiMatteo recorded a pair of individual first place finishes in the 50-Free (25.26) and the 100-Fly (59.26). Fallyn Schwake cruised to a first place finish in the 1000-Free as she posted a time of 11:02.35. Grainger touched the wall first in the 200-Free as she finished the event at 2:02.32. Oostman swept the backstroke events as she also recorded a first place finish in the 100-Back with a time of 58.73.

Paige Eavenson earned first place honors in the 200-Fly as she ended the event at 2:14.38. Kailey Adcock cruised in the 500-Free and earned first place honors with a time of 5:25.84. Karleen Gernaldy earned the final individual first place finish for the EIU women as she earned hers in the 400-IM at 4:52.03.

Soccorso-McCoy had a big day for the EIU men as he recorded a team-high of three individual first place finishes. Soccorso-McCoy picked up a first place finish in the 200-Free (1:45.89), the 100-Free (47.28), and the 500-Free (5:01.46). O’Doherty picked up a pair of first place finishes in the 100-Back (52.13) and the 200-Back (2:00.82). Tyler Parrish earned first place honors in the 50-Free with his time of 22.36. Jacobs earned the final individual first place honor as he posted the top time in the 200-Breast (2:09.87).

Both the Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s teams ended the meet with a first place finish in the 200-Free Relay. Julia Martin teamed up with Oostman, Grainger, and DiMatteo in the event as the quartet touced the wall first at 1:41.66. Bryan McPherson, Logan Long, Brandon Robbins, and O’Doherty posted the top time in the event at 1:28.06.
