UMBC's Emily Escobedo Breaks Pool Record as Team Splits With Towson in Baltimore

UMBC split a pair of dual meets against Towson on Saturday in Baltimore.

Baltimore, Md.— Emily Escobedo broke the pool record in the 200 IM, as the women fell, 167-133 and the men defeated Towson 152-126 on Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
 
“We are excited to have Towson back on the schedule. They are a great team and great program, and they performed well, just as we did today,” head coach Chad Cradock said after the meet. “We had a lot of outstanding performances, and we are excited to continue our progress this year, and are looking toward a great meet next week at Gardner-Webb.”
 
On the women’s side, both Hania Moro and Emily Escobedo led the charge, winning three events each. Moro was a winner in the 1,000 free (10:14.64), 500 free (5:03.45) and 200 free (1:52.88).
 
Escobedo swept both breaststroke disciplines, winning the 100 breast in a time of 1:03.64 and the 200 breast in 2:14.06 by a full ten seconds. She then broke the pool record she previously set last year in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:03.15. That time bested her previous best of 2:03.56.
 
“We are proud of Emily for breaking the pool record. It shows how well she is swimming at this point in the season, and we are excited to see her grow and progress going forward,” Cradock stated about his senior captain.
 
The men kicked off the meet with win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Alexander Gilese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo and Ahmed Wahby won with a time of 1:34.52.
 
Gregor Spoerlein led the way on the men’s side, earing a pair of wins in the 50 free and 100 free. He clocked in with times of 21.19 and 46.32 respectively. Kyle Paxton also earned a pair of victories, winning the 100 breast and 200 breast in times of 58.17 and 2:08.27.
 
Both Wahby and Gliese earned individual wins on Saturday taking the 100 back (51.01) and the 200 back (1:50.23) respectively. Other Retriever winners included Haythem Abdelkhalek in the 1,000 free (9:32.80), Ilia Rattsev in the 200 free (1:41.25), and Nikola Trajkovic in the 200 IM (1:55.33).
 
The 400 free relay team of Rattsev, Jared Vance, Wahby and Spoerlein ended the meet on a high note, winning with a time of 3:06.32.
 
The Retrievers are back in the pool on Saturday, October 29 when the Dawgs head south for a dual meet with Gardner-Webb starting at noon.
