Alex Munson, Annie Hayburn Lead Loyola To Wins Against Lafayette

Alex Munson and Annie Hayburn helped Loyola to a pair of wins against Lafayette College on Saturday.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Led by freshmen Alex Munson and Annie Hayburn, the Loyola University men's and women's swimming and diving teams won their consecutive dual meets of the season as they swept decisions from Patriot League rival Lafayette College. The men's team upped its record to 3-0 with a 176-112 win over the Leopards while the women's team beat Lafayette, 219-73.

Both the men's and women's team were so dominant that each team won 14 of 16 events in the meet.

Munson led the men's team with four first place finishes. Munson took first place in the 200-free (1:44.26) and the 200-backstroke (1:57.39) as well as the 200 I.M. (1:57.94). He was also part of the 200-free relay which closed out the meet by taking first with a time of 1:27.72.

Junior Alec Sperandino also swam well for the men's team with three first place finishes and a second place showing. Sperandio finished first in the 50-free (22.02) and the 100-free (48.22). He was also part of the victorious 200-free relay team and finished second in the 100-backstroke (53.64).

Junior diver Sam Baluzy came up with first place showings in the one-meter and three-meter dives. He had 223.95 points on the one-meter board and 244.72 points on the three-meter board.

Senior Zeke Wolfgang earned first place in the 100-backstroke (52.21). After finishing second in the 200-back (2:00.11), he was part of two winning relay teams. He swam the leadoff leg for the 200-medley relay (1:36.96) and was also part of the 200-free relay.

Junior Ben Cono finished first in the 100-breaststroke (55.09) and was part of the 200-free relay. He was also second in the 100-fly (52.51).

Freshman Luca DiCapua also had an impressive afternoon. He took first place in the 200-breast (2:16.33) and was second in the 200 I.M. (2:02.91).

Another freshman, Richie Kogut won the 200-fly (2:00.92) while junior Andrew Mann was second in the 200-fly (2:01.29).

Junior Chris Cary took first place in the 500-free (4:53.47) and swam on the 200-medley relay team that took first place. Cary was also second in the 200 I.M. (1:44.26) and finished second in the 200-breaststroke (2:16.40).

Coach Brian Loeffler also got a strong effort from freshman John Sakovich, who was second in the 1000-free (10:22.92). Jay Venit also took second in the 100-breaststroke (1:01.27) and Adrian Halarewicz was second in the one-meter diving event.

Hayburn led the Tiger women's swimmers with four first place finishes. She won the 100-backstroke (59.49) and she also finished first in the 100-fly (58.37). Hayburn was also part of two winning relay teams. She helped the 200-medley relay team finish first with a time of 1:49.18. She also contributed to the 200-free relay (1:40.88) which finished first.

Once again, the Greyhounds dominated the diving events. Sophomore Lindsey Staszewski, the Patriot League Diver of the Week, won both the one-meter (227.77 points) and three-meter (240.52) diving events. Junior Maggie Garrahan was second in both diving events again. She had a score of 204.59 points on the one-meter board before earning 228.00 points on the three-meter board.

In the 1000-free, Elizabeth Romano took first place with a time of 10:52.39 while Courtney Kenyon was second (11:00.24). Kenyon also took first place in the 100-breaststroke (1:06.90).

Junior Courtney Martin also swam well for Loyola. She won the 200-fly (2:12.01) and took second in the 100-fly (59.32) behind Hayburn. Martin was also part of the 200-free relay that took first place.

In the 200-breaststroke, freshman Devin Cronin finished first with a time of 2:26.35. Cronin also finished second in the 100-breast (1:07.39). She also swam a leg for the winning 200-medley relay team.

Junior Maddie Myers and sophomore Aly Pacitti were a potent one-two punch for the Greyhounds in the freestyle events. Myers won the 200-free (1:57.87) and the 500-free (5:12.95). Pacitti was runner-up to her teammate in both events. She had a time of 1:57.91) in the 200-free and turned in a time of 5:19.83) in the 500-free. Pacitti also swam on the 200-free relay which was first.

Junior Jenna Egan finished first in the 200-backstroke (2:11.84) for the Greyhounds. In the 200 I.M., freshman Emily Koegl took first place with a time of 2:15.69. Koegl was also second in the 200-back (2:14.25).

Freshman Alden Coyne finished second to Lafayette's Sara Sherry by just 0.01 seconds in the 100-free. She had a time of 55.32 seconds. Coyne was also part of the 200-free relay that won.

Freshman Emily O'Halloran was second in the 200 I.M. (2:16.77) while senior Theresa McKallen was runner-up to Cronin in the 200-breaststroke (2:27.50).

Senior Marie Clarkson helped the Loyola cause by swimming the leadoff leg of the 200-medley relay. Clarkson was also runner-up in the 100-backstroke (1:01.41).

Senior Tara Mulligan was runner-up in the 50-free (25.63).

Loyola will put its unbeaten record on the line next weekend when the Greyhound men's and women's teams host the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Friday and Saturday, October 28-29. The meet, which honors the memory of long-time Loyola Coach Tom Murphy, includes Drexel and Johns Hopkins University. Action gets underway on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Mangione Pool.
