USC swept FGCU and CSU Bakersfield this evening during its home opener.

The No. 12 USC swimming and diving teams, under a cloudless sky with 80-degree weather, turned in successful home-opening performance as the Trojan women defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 162-124, while the men downed CSU Bakersfield, 171-97.
The men’s squad improved to 3-0 overall while the women, who saw freshmen win a combined eight events, moved to 2-0.
The Trojan women opened the meet as senior Anika Apostalon, sophomore Riley Scott, junior Hannah Weiss and freshman Louise Hansson won in 1:42.20. The USC men also won the opening 200y medley relay as junior Ralf Tribuntsov, senior Steven Stumph and juniors Dylan Carter and Santo Condorelli took first in 1:29.55.
Freshman Becca Mann, an open water national teamer, won her first home distance event by taking the 1000y free in 10:01.20, more than eight seconds clear of Florida Gulf Coast’s Liz Ziegler’s 10:09.92. Junior Pawel Furtek then crushed the men’s race in 9:32.25, winning by almost 20 seconds.
Freshman Tatum Wade took the 200y free in 1:48.23 while Scott, broadening her skillset, took second in 1:50.50. Carter (1:36.56) and freshman Thomas Reed (1:41.87) went 1-2 on the men’s side.
The Trojans continued the 1-2 streak as Weiss (55.00) and sophomore Hanni Leach (55.49) took the women’s 100y back while Tribuntsov (47.70) and junior Jon Knox (50.92) did the same in the men’s race.
Sophomore Kirsten Vose won the women’s 100y breast in 1:03.52 with sophomore Olivia Ontjes third (1:05.69). CSU Bakersfield’s Jake Chir won the men’s 100y breast in 57.91 with USC sophomore Billy Monjay took second (58.31).
Sophomore Maddie Wright captured the 200y fly in 1:58.07 while freshman Catherine Sanchez touched second in 2:00.27. Senior co-captain Michael Domagala took the men’s 200y fly in 1:48.13.
Freshman Stanzi Moseley continued her fine early season sprinting with a win in the 50y free in 23.25 while Tribuntsov took first in 20.66. Moseley (49.91) came back to join Vose (50.35 in a 1-2 finish in the 100y free while Carter also doubled up with a win in the men’s race in 44.28. Sophomore Kyle Grissom took second (46.41).
Leach won the women’s 200y back in 2:00.27, edging Apostalon’s 2:00.43. Knox won the men’s 200y back in 1:50.84, winning by almost four seconds.
Wade doubled up to win the 200y breast in 2:16.91 to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish with senior Kelsey Kafka second (2:17.10), Ontjes third (2:20.60), senior Riley Hayward fourth (2:21.70). Stumph took the men’s 200y breast in 2:03.08.
Mann and Furtek, earlier winners in the 1000y free, both completed successful distance doubles with late wins in the 500y free. Mann posted a 4:56.09 to hold off Florida Gulf Coast’s Zieger (4:57.57) and Linda Shaw (4:57.78) while Furtek swam a 4:37.81, holding off sophomore teammate Walker Bell.
Sanchez touched first in the 100y fly in 54.89 while sophomore Alex Valente got to the wall first in the men’s race in 49.34. Hansson (1:59.52) and Domagala (1:49.32) completed the individual swimming with wins in the 200y IM.
Sophomore Maddie Witt won the 3-meter diving (289.28) while freshman Naomi Gowlett led USC on 1-meter (252.23). Dashiell Enos (313.50) and Nick Mamola (249.60) went 1-2 on men’s 1-meter.
Florida Gulf Coast won the women’s 400y free relay with USC’s Victoria Toris, Wade, Sanchez, Apostalon second (3:24.87). The men ended with a bang as Condorelli, Tribuntsov, Grissom and Carter won in 2:59.04.
USC returns to action Nov. 4 against Arizona State at 2 p.m. and vs. Arizona on Nov. 5 at noon.
