UC Davis Notches Win Against Loyola Marymount

UC Davis claimed a victory today against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles tonight.

LOS ANGELES -- The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team officially opened its 2016-17 campaign with a victory in Southern California on Friday afternoon, as the Aggies won eight of the 14 events on the day to post a, 146.50-109.50, over Loyola Marymount at the Burns Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.

Junior Courtney Schultz posted a pair of wins on the day for UC Davis, which had six individuals win races, swept the two relays, and posted the fastest times in the final two events of the day after exhibitioning all its swimmers to close out the meet.

The Aggies opened by taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay to jump out to the early lead, while freshman Olivia Smith brought home the team's first individual win, taking home the title in the 1000 free (10:39.04) in her Division I debut. UC Davis followed that up with a sweep of the 200 free, led by Marissa Brown (1:56.04), Mia Facey (1:57.25), and Ali Sena (1:57.57), as the Aggies never trailed on Friday.

Schultz led a sweep in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.41, followed closely by teammate Kristin Schumann (105:50), and Elise Wright (1:09.42), and posted her second win of the day three events later when she led a 1-2 finish for the Aggies in the 100 free with a time of 52.56 to place just ahead of teammate Jamie Pincin (53.11). 

Other winners for UC Davis included senior Kirsten Brand (24.33), who led an Aggie sweep in the 50 free, sophomore Solie Laughlin (2:08.68) in the 200 back, and senior Elise Roberts (2:21.59) in the 200 breast. Sophomore Eva Chung posted the fastest time of the day in the 200 IM, touching in a time of 2:09.24, while the Aggies' foursome of Facey, Robin Lampron, Sena, and Kirsten Brand, posted the fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:38.07).

Aislinn Dresel led the way in the 100 back (59.83), finishing second in the event, while Roberts and newcomer Cora McClelland tied for second in the 200 fly, touching in a time of 2:08.67. Junior Angelica Nowack also finished third in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.10, and McClelland was second in the 100 fly in a time of 57.65.

Schultz led the way, scoring 18 points in individual events while also contributing to the winning 200 medley relay squad. Kirsten Brand added 13.5 individual points while swimming the anchor led of the 200 free relay, while Roberts, Laughlin, and Smith finished in double figures with 12.5, 11, and 10 individual points, respectively.

UC Davis remains in Los Angeles to compete on Saturday (Oct. 21) in a meet hosted by UCLA, featuring Oregon State, San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara, at the Spieker Aquatics Center at Noon.
