NC State Press Release

RALEIGH- The NC State swimming and diving team opened its 2016-17 season in dominating fashion, winning 17 of the 20 events contested on the first day of its two-day dual meet at home with Wisconsin on Friday evening inside the Casey Aquatic Center.

After grabbing a quick lead in the relay events and never letting go, NC State's men lead, 136-50, while its women hold a 102.5-83.5 lead over the Badgers after the first day of competition.

In addition to its strong performance in the water the Wolfpack set four pool records, notched 15 NCAA 'B' standard times and two divers earned their NCAA Zone qualification marks.

Quoting The Coaches
Swimming

"I thought it was a pretty strong first day for us. We had some areas where we were really good in and I'm excited about where we are to start off the season," said head coach Braden Holloway. "In others we expected the team to be where we were today, but overall I think everyone was just ready to compete. This was the latest we've gone into the season before competing, and I think it showed today that we were eager to get in the water and race.

"The women are in a pretty good team battle with Wisconsin and just have to come back tomorrow morning and finish the job that they started today. With the guys I don't want them to lay off the pedal. I want them to do as well as they did today and we'll see how they bounce back."

Diving
"It was a good day on the boards," said head diving coach Yahya Radman. "On our first list we missed the mark, and it became a test of coming back from behind in the second list. We built today to mimic Zones, as Stewart (Spanbauer) qualified for his first time for Zones and Harrison (Mitchell) qualified to return to the championship in their second list.

"On the women's side our freshmen did what they needed to do. They showed consistency and poise with Madeline (Kline) as our top finisher taking third overall."

Wolfpack Relays
NC State showed its dominance and depth in relays on day one, as the Pack won all four contested.

On the women's side the Pack earned a one-two finish in the 400 medley relay, as the first-place relay team of Alexia Zevnik, Kayla Brumbaum, Krista Duffield and Courtney Caldwell posted a pool record time of 3:36.89.

The men's team also picked up a win in its event, as the squad of Hennessey Stuart, Derek Hren, Ryan Held and Scott Johnson touched the wall at 3:12.11.
